I have a 97 f-150 lariat with drum brakes in the back and i was wondering if anyone knew how to or if it could be done, but i would like to switch it out the drums for disc. The only reason why im considering is because my rear end has gone out and I have to buy a new one for it and the place I'm looking at has one out of a 97 and one out of 2000(with disc) so if it was possible i would like to switch. Any help would be appreciated. thanks
It CAN be done because I bought the rear end and master cylinder from a guy that did the swap. Just get everything that's different from the "new" rear end donor. That may include parking brake cables( which should come on the rear end ), proportioning valve, master cylinder .......
It should, I got disks from a guy who swapped a 99 disk to a 98 drum. Unfortunately the Bearings are larger on the disk and the back plate mounting is different so I can't just bolt on the disks. But the lines and emerg cables and mounts are the same for 99 to 98. I am sure someone hear will have better details.
oh, since the 2000 has a higher load rating (larger wheel bearings) technically the truck capacity will increase to match the new axle.
Your 97 wheels may not fit over the larger studs of a 2000. I don't know for sure. The 97 is 12mm and the 2000 should be 14mm. The bolt pattern is the same though. If they do fit, you will need the lugnuts from the 2000 on the rear.
what went out on the rear end. i am having some issue on mine having Alot of side to side play. how many miles is on your truck and have you had any problems with the front wheel bearing hubs going bad mine have never been replaced and i know have 178,000 on it and i hear a poping noise and can't find it, checked every ball joint and tie rod comeing to the wheel hubs i think and its not cheap!!
i shot either the side gear (i think thats what its called but don't hold me to it) out of the rear end. the body its self has around 185k to 190k cant remember for sure, but i put in a new engine 4k, new tranny little over 5k, new supercharger under 3k, tires, and soon to be rear end. but no problems yet with the front end (knock on wood)
