E4OD Converter Over Heats
From the beginning I've had a problem with the converter. When traveling slowly off-road (even on moderate grades) for a period of time; or when backing with a trailer up a grade, the converter overheats and spews trans fluid from inside the bell housing (not the top vent). I lose about a 1.5 quarts. After it cools, there is no leakeage of fluid. The trans temp stays normal (the guage is reading at the pressure test on the trans housing so it doesn't see the converter temp). There are no other signs of incorrect operation.
I had Banks install a Trans Command module (problem existed prior to install). I went to an oversized cooler and conducted a flow check that showed normal. Ford replaced the trans and converter in 1998 with the then latest E40D mods and it made no difference.
I've been to many trans shops and to Ford with the problem. Each time I've drawn a blank. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?
The second thing that will help is better trans cooling. Keep the cooler in the radiator, it's a big help at low speeds. Change the air to oil cooler for the biggest you can find. A cooler from a 6.0L is about the best cooler out there. An electic fan blowing on the air to oil will also help.
