Question tranny problem

I have a 97 f250 4x4 with 7.3 powerstroke, the auto. transmission has been acting up lately. First problem the OD light on the shifter is blinking. It kinda jumps into gear after leaving a stoplight and when you put it in reverse it hesitates wanting to kill the motor. I pulled the pan to change the filter and no metal parts in the bottom to show wear. I was wondering if it might be a solenoid or something else? No codes are showing and the fluid was quite dark am i safe to just change fluid and filter? thank you

The OD light flashing means there is a code set for the tranny. Best thing to do is to get the truck scanned for codes then post them here and we can help you from there. The Codes will send us in the right direction.

The bottom line is that you're tranny is bad, and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Best to just go ahead and get it to a tranny shop before it leaves you stranded. Most good tranny shops know how to rebuild an E40D so it will be strong and reliable, or you can shop around and order a bullet proof trans from one of the venders who build them.

Something that will trigger that light and is not the end of the tranny is the sensor on the top of the rear differential. It's called (RABS) Rear Antilock BRake Sensor or (VSS)Vehicle Speed Sensor. Remove it and clean the crap off. It's magnetic and holds steel particles. Check the connector for loose or corroded terminals. You can check the output of it under the hood by the master cylinder. It's a 3 hole connector with only 2 wires coming out of it.
MEASURE RABS SENSOR OUTPUT
  • Put vehicle on hoist and raise so that the rear wheels can rotate freely.
  • Verify the vehicle is in 4x2 mode and hubs are unlocked.
  • Set an AC voltmeter on the 2000mV scale.
  • Remove the cap from the RABS sensor test connector and connect the AC voltmeter across the connector leads.
  • Start the engine and turn the rear wheels at 8 km/h (5 mph).
  • Measure the voltage output of the RABS sensor.
Is 650mV or more registered? If not replace it.
