Hello, I have a 02 windstar with a 3.8 v6. When the van gets warm and on a long drive 20 to 30 mins, the lights start to go dim and the guages start pegging and then go back to normal. I have replaced the alt battery and checked the cables. I called the ford dealer and they think I may need to have the PCM reflashed. I understand the voltage regulator is in the PCM is this true and could a reflash fix this problem? Thanks!
I am not sure about the PCM reflash, but it does sound like you have a charging system problem, even though you replaced the main components.
I would get a meter and put on the battery with the engine running and see what the voltage is. It should be around 14 volts. I would then start wiggling the wiring and connectors around to see if you can make it fail. If it fails, you should see the voltage drop to probably 12 or so volts.
