Got a 77 F100 with a 300 six that has a dura spark 2 system with the original Motorcraft ignition module. Recently it has been just dying all of a sudden just like you shut the key off. It will start right back up and run fine. It has been doing it more often now. Had a spare control module so put it on and the engine will start and then die right away. Put the motorcraft one back on and it starts right up. Does this sound like the Motorcraft module is getting bad and the spare is already bad?
I can get a unilite distributor, coil and MSD 6a box off of a friend. If I use these components would I still need the dura spark control module?

Modules overheat, when that happens, vehicle dies. When module cools, vehicle restarts. Eventually the vehicle will die, and not restart. Replace the module with a new Motorcraft module, don't buy anything else, as most of the aftermarket modules are made in China. Replace the stator (pickup coil) in the distributor also.
When you replace the module, use some washers to space it away from the fender apron, so it gets better airflow. Heat is the mortal enemy of Ford ignition modules.

I checked out the part numbers that you listed and the control module has been superceded by part number 1U2Z-12A199-AA. Would these parts have the Motorcraft stamping on them (control module)and be the same as original parts. They cost about twice what it would at the autoparts store but I know they would last probably twice as long if not longer.

You're correct, I just typed D9VZ-12A199-A into FTE sponsor DIRECTFORDPARTS online website, and came up with the same new part number. I don't know whether it's marked Motorcraft or not, since the number just changed, and I've been retired for 10 years!
EDIT: New Motorcraft part number: DY-893 I assume with this new number, the part is also marked Motorcraft.
DIRECTFORDPARTS (GAUDIN FORD-LAS VEGAS) gives FTE members a discount on parts. They show a list price of $104.87 / FTE member net = $55.59
If you order parts off their site, drop the hyphens from the part numbers. Type: 1U2Z12A199AA or DY893

Although possible, it is odd that both modules would be defective.
It could be your coil or magnetic pick-up has a short in it.
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
Found the source of the truck dying. It was a bad connection on the back of the ignition switch. Replaced the switch and connector and no more problems.
