fan and a/c question

does anyone know if the fan is always engaged when the a/c is on? this is for a 5.4L engine if it makes a difference. was pulling a boat last weekend on a long interstate trip and was wondering if the fan was engaged while i was running the a/c non-stop. trying to squeak a little more power out of my engine and am thinking about e-fans again.

the fan is controlled by temp. i was pulling a 5000 pound trailer last weekend in 92 degree weather at 70 MPH. i noticed the fan was on about 80% of the time. it would kick off for 2-3 minutes, then back on for 10 minutes, etc.

this question will show my ignorance of how a clutch fan works, but is it electronically controlled at all?

Nope.

It's based on the viscosity change of the oil/thermal spring in the clutch as a function of temperature.
