Cool 05 6.0 problems

I purchased my 05 6.0 4x4 Limited Excursion new just over 2 years ago. It`s all black with 6'' lift, 35'' BFG's on 20's, airbags, cat back exhaust, cold air intake, and tripple gauge pillar. I have about 65k invested in my ride, and my wife says I love it more than I love her! HaHa. It has been my pride and joy for my family for traveling, towing, 4x4ing in the dunes, and just cruzing around town; turning heads. Over the last few months, it has been in the shop more than it's been on the road, with a lot of the famous 6.0 problems. Vehicle has 34000 miles on it. Ford has installed new- rear main seal, rear cover seal, head gasket, bed plate gasket, IPR valve, A/C vacuum pump, A/C control head, turbo, EGR valve, EGR cooler, oil cooler, and last but not least a new EBP sensor. That lasted just over a week; then vehicle started sputtering, buck/jerking, and dying and could barely cripple home. It`s been in with Ford since July 5th. The dealership called me on the 6th and said they dont have any idea why it`s running like it is and not throwing any codes. Luckily all of this is covered under warranty; but it`s still a pain to have to keep taking it back and forth to the dealership; not to mention the piece of crap mini van rentals that were stuck driving for weeks at a time!!! I dont know what to do at this point. Love my ride-starting to hate my diesel! Help

clean the turbo
change fuel filters
change oil
run an additive
run some hot shot through the system
EGR replacement
EGR delete
buy a sct and turn the EGR off.

tons of things can be done, but its odd that ford has no idea. Id take it to a new dealer and give it a shot there. Theres not a ton to troubleshoot imho.

Welcome to the site Sandaholic.

My 2 centavos worth is to consider a different dealership for maintenance.

I remind folks that just because the sales dept was good doesn't mean the service dept is just as good. I've read of folks finding out the techs doing maintenance on their 6.0s aren't certified 6.0 techs.

Good Luck!

Joe

With all the other mods most folks would have a tuner installed as well. Is there a tuner involved?

Yes, I`ve had the SCT tuner on there for about a year now with the EGR turned off. The turbo, EGR valve, EGR cooler and oil cooler and almost everything I listed are brand new, and less than 2 months and 1000 miles old. I just did my oil change and both fuel filters at 30000 miles, and keep very well maitained. I also run a Lucas brand fuel aditive/cleaner from time to time. I`m going to take it to a different dealership next time. I`m still waiting to hear back on my engine problems, and am also waiting for new grill and bumper that were scratched on last visit. Gonna try corprate Ford!

Is your current dealer aware of the tuner?

No, I`m afraid to say anything to the dealer so they dont void my warranty. So I always disconnect batteries and clear out before taking back.

Then I wouldn't bother taking it to another dealer.

Why not? I know that ford will void my warranty, and I`m not gonna get stuck footing the bill for Ford and International`s costly mistakes!!!!

Because you are hiding a pre-condition from your dealer and the next dealer. Thereby possibly causing them to chase phantom symptoms. Wasting your time and the techs time. Your dealer likely knows anyway and has been cutting you a tremendous amount of slack.

The techs can't duplicate the condition or condition parameters, if you de-mod the engine. In the meantime....You are pissing on the tech's leg and telling them it is raining.

Don't tread Ford or the dealer unless you are forthcoming with your mods.

Just out of curiosity, which dealership were you taking the X to? I only ask because I was in Mesa for a few weeks and so I took my truck to Berge Ford for an oil leak. Needless to say, it's now leaking more than ever. I'd really consider making an appointment for Sanderson Ford (it will be a few weeks until they can see the truck) as they are the best in Phoenix metro. I didn't take mine there because it was going to be more than a month until they can see your truck....the cost of being the best. The only problem is that they might look into the motor to see if the problems are related to the tuner. Berge Ford doesn't care if there was a tuner as long as it was tuned back to stock. So you kind of get stuck in the middle because you don't want to lose your warranty, but you also want the best techs taking care of your truck.

The dealership is Earnhardts Tempe. I've been to Berge before. They're the ones that did the bedpan, rear main seals, and head gaskets. I could've done a better job pulling the motor! There was grease all over and missing parts. When I got home, I noticed that the aircleaner was actually laying sideways, unattatched, under the hood. I actually had to take it back to have them complete the job. I haven't been to Sanderson for motor work yet but will probably go there soon. We only put the tuner on the truck to help it run better...according to what everyone has said. We had LOTS of problems before the tuner, anyhow. There have been 68 different TSB's on the 6.0 so how would my tuner happen to be the issue here?

Didn't say it was. I said you changed the operating parameters by removing it. Very possibly making your issues much more difficult to diagnose. EX: A tuned truck has the opportunity to create much higher boost than a stock truck. Could have been a precursor to your head gasket issue.

I am curious, did all those TSB's affect your truck?

From your first post:

...but it`s still a pain to have to keep taking it back and forth to the dealership..... I don't know what to do at this point.
You could start by being honest with the techs.

Didn`t even have chip on after last service. So parameters never changed. I`ve had several of those TSB issues. Vehicle is more dependable with the chip, and that is why I use it.
