I was also told by a trusted mechanic that my pitman arm was GOING bad. I have 118k miles on it and have not changed it yet but I will when the time is right.
Did you find out how to determine it is bad? I've had a couple of mechanics say there is nothing wrong with it. But it has me nervous so I'd like to check it for myself. It looks like a helleva project to take on.
"Trusted Mechanic"? What's that? I've never run into one of those.
My wife even got ripped of at a G_____ M_____ (kind of primate) on an oil change and lube.
As long as you have no slop or clunking noises in the steering, don't worry about it.
I have 150k miles on my truck. The steering make a squeaking noise in the front. I had the truck at the dealership for the fuel line recall lately.
They tried to sell me a new pitman arm. They tried to scare the heck out of my wife on the phone, claiming that it was a safety hazard.
Now, I talked to my friend who is a Ford mechanic. He says the squealing is typical to these front ends. He says not to worry unless you are annoyed by the noise. The parts are non-greasable. Greasing stuff would be all you'd need to do to get rid of the squeal. Anyway, The truck has made this noise since we got it at 120k miles and we'll just keep it like that.
Believe me, the pitman arm will NOT fall off unless you have a severe clunk or damage from the road.
Thanks George,
Funny thing, Ford told me my pitman arm was bad when I took it in for the recall. Sounds like part of the plan. To much greed. You'd thiink they would be loyal to their customers not find ways to rip them off.
