Ignition key removal
Ignition key removal
Just got an 88 F150 truck for parts, need to use the steering column on my 88 F250, but I noticed yesterday you can't get the key out of the ignition, and the wheel doesn't lock..Am I going to have to tear into this column to repair it before I can use it on my F250??? It's also a tilt column if that matters....I pulled the horn assembly off and the nut on the column does not look like it's ever been removed.....I looked to see if it has a push button like some Fords do but it doesn't...Ideas?????
Turn the key to the run position and push in the pin under the collum (under the ignition switch/key area) and pull the whole thing out.
Then do the same to your old one and put your ignition in the new collum.
It self locks when the key is turned off.
There might be some issues with the collum lock rod or the electrical switch further down the collum, but if it works after the ignition swap, the ignition (key switch) was the problem, if not, check it out after you pull it (it will be so easy then) and swap in the parts from the old one.

I had this happen with my truck. I could get the key out if I fiddled with it and grabed the little ring at the outside area of where the key goes inand lined it up. It became a PITA, so I had the lock changed.
This presents a problem with having to have 2 key's now. [Door & Ign] Like brand X.
The fix for that is to take the door key and the new ign key to a good locksmith
/ keycutter.
Have them cut one side of the key for the Ign and the other side for the door.
Cut a notch in the key on the Ign side where you grab the key with your fingers.
Then you can just feel the key to install it in the IGN switch with Notch UP.
Now you have one key again.
If you own 2 Fords without the BS sensor on the key, you can cut one side for the truck and one side for the car your wife drives. Again with the Notch cut for your truck that you drive all the time being UP.
I did that on my 85 F-150 and my Ex's '85 T-Bird.
