glad you got her fixed... 9 times out of 10 when a cable shoots sparks..and the truck wont start..i find its a conection at one end or the other of that cable..but its always good to clean them all..
Completely trouble free for nearly a month, now it is back with a vengenance. Will not start at all. Just the click. All connections are like new. Could it be the starter? It was put in about a year ago brand new, not rebuilt. I sure hate to do that again, but will do what I have to.
Nope, used to, but not today. I have tried jumping to one battery and having the charger on the other on the start position. Why I am having a hard time with thinking it is the starter is because when it works, it works so well. Last time it went bad, it did it over months, not a day. I am at a loss for right now. Both batteries are in good condition (just load tested) and were high end batteries when I bought them.
It is at the starter, not the solenoid near the passenger battery. It is either coming from the starter motor itself, or that thingamajig that rides piggy back on the side of the starter, you know, where the cables attach. The small cable on the thingamajig is the only cable I have not taken off and cleaned.
Got it again, but I did the same damn thing I used to do with my race car. Changed 2 things at the same time. But I am inclined to suspect it was the small cable on the thingamajig, and not me tapping on the thingamajig with a big hammer.

Got to be politically correct here, the guberment now says that a big hammer is to be refered to as major adjustment tool. little hammer is now a minor adjustment tool
Sounds like my pool pump. I know what is wrong with it but do not feel like fixing it this late in the season. I just go out with the rubber mallet and turn on the power, then hit the pump body with the mallet. Works every time.
Okay, now I am leaning towards a bad ground somewhere. Would not start this morning, just the click. Getting under and giving it some loving with the old hammer while someone else was using the key I noticed the solenoid on the starter was sparking from red to black. Bad ground somewhere, right???? So where is the main chassis ground for the entire truck?
If you have a helper, you can meter each lead and see which one have a larger voltage drop across the connection. That would show which connection to repair. Do this on both batteries and the starter. You could do this on the alternator(s) also.
If there is any problems, the resistance between the cable and post would drop a lot of voltage and show up on your multimeter. But you have to have a helper in this case.
A fully charged battery that is not going bad should hold 9 vdc when cranking. You electronics shut down below that point, usually 8.5-8.7 vdc. Remember also if you have one battery go bad, you need to replace both as the other one may have damage not showing up yet from handling more then it's share of the load. If it fails later you could dAmage the new battery you put in.
