Which years should I look for?
Which years should I look for?
The engine in my '89 F-150 is getting quite tired. I am thinking of replacing it with a junkyard engine (302) when it finally gives up the ghost.
My question is: Do I need a specific year engine('86-'97?) or will any year 302 block work? Also, does the block need to have come from a truck or will a car engine work too?
The way I see it I'll need to reuse my existing oil pan(and pump), timing chain and cover, heads, and intake(s). So since all this is going to be reused, all I need is a "short block", correct?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Jun-02 AT 09:13 PM (EST)]Pretty much any year 302 will work within the exception of the ones with 16 intake manifold bolts. Just don't forget to hook all of the modernized fuel management junk to it. But, if you can, try to score an '86-'93 5.0 out of a mustang. They came from the factory with forged pistons and a much higher than normal nickel content in the block itself. Making it not only reliable and durable but also a prime canidate for nitrous oxide/forced induction later on down the road. Just something to think about.
