I'm at 135,000 on the stock tranny. I don't plan on doing major engine modifications. A dp-tuner 80 econo chip, a 4" exhaust, and maybe an ATS turbo housing are probably going to be it.
Is there any need to upgrade the stock transmission? Would a BTS valve body and upgraded torque converter increase the lifespan or with this many miles or is it more econominal of just waiting to rebuild the whole thing eventually?
I've always preferred manuals, but got an auto this time and am not sure what to expect.
Cruiser...I did the following (and, knock on wood, never had a tranny problem):
TruCool 40k auxillary tranny cooler and added auxillary fan for slow speed operation (under 2-5 mph for long periods)
BD TorqLoc
external tranny filtration kit
MagHytech pan - increased capacity (I wouldn't do this again, though)
Magnefilter
Tranny temperature gauge
I'd save the money on the torque converter and BTS valve body and if/when the stock tranny went south, I'd go to BTS (if I lived in the ewast) or John Woods (in the west) to get them to do the tranny right.
I second that Tru-Cool cooler. I used to see 180* empty on the freeway and since installing I haven't seen over 150 and that's towing the boat or the jet skis in Southeast Texas heat.
1) BTS advises against it and my experience concurs with their recommendation. It is a large cost for questionable benefit. I saw no change in tranny temps until I did the external cooler and filtration system. The larger capacity pan did nothing as far as I can see for temps. In fact, when I got the fluid hot (200) it took longer to cool down, than the stock pan. I believe this is mostly because of the increased capacity, not because the MagHytec pan is defective...more hot fluid just takes longer to cool. Now with the TruCool and external filtration I never see 200.
2) I'd have more money for mods that actually have measurable improvement on performance/vehicle longevity. I could have installed a BTS valve body which would have had more positive effect that the MagHytec pan did.
A cooler most definately, I have a trucool as well and very please with it. 6.0 tranny cooler is pretty popular as well. I'd go with a Transgo Shift kit if you decide on that route. I have run both sonnax and transgo, while the sonnax setup is good, the transgo is definately better and more to my likings.
Same place I ordered mine from. Just a note, in the picture is shows the cooler dead center. My first mount was just like this till I put the grill pack on and the dang FORD emblem blocked a majority of the cooler, So I moved it down quite a bit to get the most air flow.
