I recently changed out my 4.2L with a 4.6L from a mustang. I am wondering what computer to run with this. The local parts store gives several different ones with different calibrations. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you transfer all the emissions related parts from your old engine to your new one? If not, what happened to the computer that was with the 4.6L Mustang?
The Calibration Code on your truck is on a yellow decal on the core support, but it won't help much if you swapped engines. You need the computer from the Mustang. Computers are matched to Calibration Codes and are programed with specific info. Change the engine without swapping the emissions parts or the computer can create a nightmare...trying to get the vehicle to run correctly.
What you may fail to realize is that truck application programming is different from a car essentially because of weight first and options second.
For example; does your truck have PATS, does it have ETAC, power windows, what gem programming is needed, 4x4, gear ratio, tire size etc.
The PCM programming is very specific or some things may not work.
It would have been much simpler if the truck was a v8 to begin with, then programming would not be an issue.
Another thing about a car application is the ignition timing is more aggressive as opposed to a truck that would get to much timing for the weight and any loading.
Good luck.
I swapped all the emissions from the 4.2 over and essentially the only thing I am using is a mustang engine block. I have a computer for a 98 mustang that will not let the truck fire. I also have one for a 97 that allows the truck to start and then die. I know it is in the computer system, but not sure what to use to fix it. The wiring for a mustang and truck of that year are the same except the truck requires a knock sensor which I do not have.
Your best bet is to find sombody with a chassie dyno and have them custom tune it with a flip chip probably... thats probably where i will end up if the dyno guy cant put a stock 5.4l tune on my 4.6l... just wheel her up on the dyno and let her eat...wooot
hey i rebuild ford ecu's at work, i might be able to get your one depending on year pats wont be an issue as long as it's not "e" type. i'd need your vin and all vehicle info and what you want the ecu to do. the calibrations ford doesn't say what they do, like when a new one comes out so i couldn't even tell you that.
your 4.2 ecu won't souport a 4.6 just because the number of drivers you could go down like from 8 to 6 with a calibration if it's even possible but ford won't put extra drivers, more money.
well i need a 4.6l ecu with a 5.4l stock tune on it... can you do that? i know its possible... but the big problem is that my 5.4l is running off the 4.6l Coil pack ignition meaning the bunch of 5.4l ecu's i have are usless do to plug configuration..
you need a 4.6 mustang ecu with a f150 5.4 cabilration?
i can get the same year 4.6 ecu as the f150. there's a lot of 5.4 calibration files for the f150 tho. if u want i will find out how many, there might be like 6 different calibration files for that f150 with the 5.4, and each has about 5 progressivly newer with updates from ford.
i need the year of the f150. vin ect. the more info the better. i'll let you know the pats type it is a,b,c or d. if i get your vin i can program the ecu and you might not have to do a pats relearn procedure, which is.
key on, ignition on for 5 sec.
then ignition off for 5 sec.
ignition on for 5 sec.
keey the battery on just cycle the ignition 5 times for 5 seconds and it should learn pats with the ecu.
try the pats procedure with your ecu's.
if you have a diagnostic tool you can read a theift detection code, thats the pats. clear and do the pats relearn.
alright well whats your problem then? the truck doesn't work when you use a 5.4l ecu? what 5.4l computer is it a 02 model or 99 model. im sure the 4.6 and 5.4 computer boards are the same (including harness plug wiring but im gonna make sure), as long as it's the same year just the calibration should be different.
i'll check the two wiring diagrams for the 4.6 and 5.4 99 f150's and there transmissions.
i know i can put something together if it is possible.
if all u need is the tune or calibration for the 5.4 on your old computer. get me the numbers on the pluf of the ecu, like,
xu3f-12a650-aub it will be similar, i'll get the same computer if available update it with the 5.4l send it to you and you let me know if it works.
the 5.4l tuning is way different and i cant plug a 5.4l ECU into my computer harness because my truck is a coil pack ignition and all 5.4l's are a COP ignition...so the wires comming out of the ecu and the pins are all different.
