Okay, I live in Florida so during the day it is blazing hot and humid, so naturally I have the A/C going on full blast. The other day I'm driving with the A/C on max and it goes from blowing out the vents on the dash to out the defrost vents. The switch is still on max A/C!
Is it the actual switch that is going bad or what? Is there any way to test it with a multi-meter or something?
The blend doors are vacuum operated, so it could be a vacuum line loose or slightly broken. It could be the switch too, though. Does it misbehave in any other setting?
That is a dead sign of a vacuum leak. on 4X4 it is usually associated with a shift to 4 wheel drive and the auto shifter leaks at the wheel hub. If you have a 4X2 or are not shifting to 4X4 when it happens the leak should be between the pump and the air box instead of the hubs
I don't know about any other setting. I only use the A/C, but once it starts to act up I tried the other settings and stills just blows out of the defrost vents.

Yes. The vacuum pump (diesels have a separate vacuum pump since there's not a good vacuum source like in a gasser) operates the SOTF (shift on the fly) 4x4 switching as well. He's saying if you have a 4x4 check to see if you can switch to 4WD when the problem is happening to help narrow down the source...
Check those vacuum lines, though. You can get to one real easy by dropping the kick panel under the glove box. I think there are two screws there in those plastic inserts. Then you'll see something like this:
With the AC in MAX, check to see that you have good vacuum on the white line. Then you can trace it back from there. You probably wont have the tee shown there, though. That's the aftermarket line I put in going to the vacuum valve under the hood the closes off my heater core when in MAX. Makes the AC much cooler. The white line normally connects directly to the siver canister.
Oh, thanks clearing that up. That might explain what happened the last time I tried to use the 4WD. I was stuck in my drive way, got out locked up the hubs and switched over to 4 high and buried myself even worse. 4WD wouldn't engage, haven't had the chance to mess with it since. That and I fixed my drive way.
Thanks for the help everybody, I do appreciate it. I have tomorrow off so after the beach, I'll start to track down this problem. Then it is time to drop the transmission and start on the down pipes. It's going to be and interesting day.
