Ambient thermometer

First off, specs: 2002 7.3L 4X4

The outside air thermometer is extremely slow to respond. For example, when I park my truck in the morning at work, the outside air is about 75 degrees and the temperature indicated in my truck at the A/C is accurate (I have the automatic or digital A/C). After work, when outside air is roughly 100 degrees (here in Alabama), when I start my truck, the temperature indicated inside the truck is still about 75. After driving for about 12 minutes, the temperature is finally accurate...it slowly "creeps" up to actual air temp.

I also notice that the larger the difference between the outside air temp and my set temp on the A/C, the harder my A/C will blow. Thus, when it is actually 100 outside, but it is indicating 75, my A/C is barely blowing.

Anyone have an experience like this? Is there some sort of feedback mechanism that prevents the temperature from responding quickly? Thirdly, is this the same temperature indication that my computer uses to control the engine?

Thanks for your help!

OK

Outside Air Temperature

If the outside temperature falls below 3.3°C (38°F), the display will alternate from "ICE" to the outside temperature at a two second rate for one minute.

The outside air temperature reading can be affected by engine heat when the vehicle is idling or has been off for less than two hours. The compass and outside temperature (19A548) will limit the increase of the displayed temperature to one degree per minute at very low speeds or immediately after the ignition is turned on. After two minutes at a sustained speed of at least 53 km/h (33 mph), effects of engine heat are minimal and the compass will display the current outside temperature reading. Temperature decreases are always updated immediately.

If the outside air temperature sensor is short or open circuited, then the display will show 60°C (140°F) or -40°C (-40°F) respectively in place of temperature

I have the pinpoint test in a PDF as well as sensor locator, PM me your email address and I'll send them to ya.

Alan,

Thanks for the information...that was really fast! I'll send the PM for the specs.

As for Dixie....I'm in what is now referred to as "Saban Country"....Tuscaloosa, AL. We'll see how long it is referred to that way after a season or two.

Again, many thanks. Based on the type of commute I do, this seems to make sense.

Jim
