So there are tons of threads about exhausts and intakes... is there an informed thought about doing one or the other or both and some data that PROVES they are good money spent without putting the motor at risk?
My primary goal is power and fuel economy... if you can have both. The truck is a new (not sure how long the "break in" period last) 07 F250 6.0 CC / SB. It has a 6" lift and running 35" toyo open country tires. I also got an SCT tuner and have several tunes I run in it... mostly econ but sometime I use the light tow or heavy tow.
Exhaust mods are NOT done for power or fuel economy. EGTs are a concern so most swap in the larger exhaust. So if you keep adding power toys (turbos, injectors, tuners, drugs) your EGTs will increase and help is found in the bigger tubing. I'd suggest using a 4" turbo back kit in stainless steel, since you have the SCT you should think about adding some gauges.
The OEM intake is well worth leaving alone unless you get into some serious power 500+ HP.
The exhaust will give you alot better sound also. The big argument after the exhaust is to keep the cat or not. I deleted mine and it sounds great. There is also hardly any highway drone which surprised me alot. I saw a slight increase in fuel mileage but it wasnt anything to write home about. Lower egt's is what many people are after with the exhaust. The intake is a warrenty debate. My home dealer was ok with it. I had an airaid for 10k miles. It boosted the mileage and it made the truck sound great at idle but i am in a lot of different places and not all dealers welcome the sight of the a/m intake so i put the stock back on and am going to wait till my warrenty runs out to put it back on. I saw about 1.5-2 mpg increase on the highway at 70mph with the airaid but like i said, not all dealers will uphold your warrenty with them on. also take the cat with to, just in case i have to slide it back on.
While anyone considering or having a tuner SHOULD do exhaust upgrades if for nothing else than allowing the exhaust out quicker and lowering egt's...
a good mandrel bent turbo back exhaust should net you about a 10 to 25 hp gain....
I think its time for me to get an exhaust for my Excursion. I ned to get gauges because the check engine light comes on after towing the toy hualer up and down the rockys and then once it sits a while after towing the light goes off.

Alright, that is the kind of straight talk I can get with... I'm not sure about the Cat or not still. Is there inspection issues (Idaho or Oregon) that the cat would be a problem if I take it off? I'm not a tree hugger but I don't want to ignore my part in keeping the air clear just for some loud engine sounds.
I do think I'll get the gauges added so I can see the EGTs. Good to know since I do tow and more times than not its in the mountains. and I guess the stock intake will stay for now. Not like I have hundreds of dollars in my pocket burning a hole.
For a simple cost effective exhaust try this set-up. Use a MBRP 3.5" downpipe and cut out the muffler. This allows the turbo to breathe easier while retaining the cat. The OEM exhaust is T409 stainless steel so you have good material you can still use. IF you decide to "kill the cat" use the MBRP cat delete pipe, it will fit the OEM exhaust so if needed you can swap the cat in-and-out as needed.
was gone for awhile but finally back... thanks for the info. Now I just need a little time to get to work on the truck. It has been at the dealership and a local 4x4 shop for a couple weeks getting some of the lift kit issues fixed... lots of frustration with that so far.
6" Fabtech with long arms. 35 toyo with incubus wheels and airbags in the rear for trailer control. had tons of problems with alignment and the track bar and now a 60 mph vibration. the dealership is trying real hard but finally had to have the local 4x4 shop get in the mix... still a little tweaking to do but better.
Remove cat, get long crowbar and a nice hammer. Pulverize the media inside the cat, shake it out and reinstall. Looks stock, sounds great, no drone, did i mention looks stock?
