I've seen situations in the past like the one you're describing, hood up, doors open and A/C clutch disengaging. Turned out the culprit was a high pressure cut-out switch located in the back of the A/C compressor.
The combination of a lack of forced air going thru the condenser combined with the evaporator sucking all that hot air from under the hood caused the pressures to skyrocket, and the safety switch shut everything down.
I don't know if these systems incorporate a high pressure safety or not, but it sounds to me like they do.
At this point, I'm just guessing at what the problem might be. If it starts blowing hot air again, I'll open the hood up and see the A/C compressor is running or not. I'm just trying to understand what is going on so I can better describe the problem to the Dealer when I take it in a couple of weeks. My wife is usually the one driving the Expedition so I don't have many opportunities to diagnose.
My 2007 Expedition cools good at idle. But that was only at about 90 outside. May be at higher outside temperatures it does not do as good. But to say that that it is normal to have no cooling at idle makes no sense. I would have a regular auto air conditioning shop look at it.
I had a 95 T Bird that had this same problem. No cooling at idle. Ford looked at it five times. Each time it was the same problem, low on gas. They changed out all kinds of parts but never could find the leak. The day I traded it in it started doing it again but held on long enough for the trade in test drive.
I had a 73 T Bird one time that was like a rolling meat locker on wheels no matter how hot it was outside. But it had a BIG compressor and a 460 engine to pull it with. I think newer cars in order to try to save fuel sort of wimp out on the cooling.
So the dealer called again and said they think they have a fix for it and that on 12 other Expeditions they had the same problem and this took care of it. They said it is the fan shroud blocking air flow so they installed pushpins retainers on both sides to correct it.
The blocked fan shroud could cause problems, do you know if it was on the front end or back end of the radiator? Please keep us posted if you see any improvement. I'm watching this thread so I get the automatic Emails.
Will the fix did not work. Called the dealer again and they said that ford is putting out a service bulletin on this problem and to call them next week to get it back in they again think they have a fix. Our service writer told me that the push pins they put in are wrong and that they are ordering new pins. I'm no mechanic but something to do with they need to be locked in and the ones they put in last time are not. I will keep you updated. Sorry I dont understand alot of what they tell me it's like another language to me. Anyways she says Ford does know this is a problem on the 07's and they think they have a fix again. Thankfully though our service writer is wonderful so if anyone needs one in Vegas let me know. She really goes the extra mile.
I take it in again next week so I will keep you updated.
Yes, please keep us posted. I'm in the Phoenix area and haven't had the time to take it in to the dealer, but fortuneatly its only been in the low 100's here the past week or so. I looked closely at my radiator behind the grill and could find nothing blocking the air flow. I did see a number of flaps that could possibly get in the way if not properly secured.
Grrrrrr. Did anyone ever find out a definitive fix for this issue? It has not been a good couple of weeks for the Expy. About a week ago the drives door handle broke inside the door and now today the A/C all but stopped working. I'm not sure if I'm having the same issue as those here but it isn't but about 83 here today and I'd be shocked if the air coming out was cooler than 80. The timing is bad since we are leaving on a weekend trip tomorrow in it. I'm going to try and get the dealer to take a look at it in the morning before we leave town but if anyone has any information on a fix I could present them with I'd surely appreciate it.
So the last fix did not work. So they said that they were going to get with Ford direct and have an engineer come out and look at it. So tonight we go to dinner and it was 110 outside and the air blowing at us was 90 degrees!!! So we went straight to the dealer to tell them this is not normal and they need to do something. So once again they take it to have it looked at. An hour later they come back and say that they think they have found something so they are going to keep it and get us a rental car. So we get a 2007 Expedition just like ours and guess what the air blows 40 degrees!! And I mean 40 degrees whether you are at a stop light or not it's always cold. So we will not be taking ours home until it's fixed. No more telling us this is "normal".

At least they have admitted the problem. This is a big step when taking a car to the dealer. I have had my truck in 7 times for the brakes. Only the last 2 times did the dealer admit there is a problem and they are trying to come up with a fix.
So we got our Expedition back and guess what it's fixed!!!! Or so we think. We went on a test drive with the manager and the air blew 50 degrees. So we took it back to the dealer and let it sit for 15 minutes and the air stayed at 50 degrees. The service manager said that he thinks when they have been checking the freon everytime the machine they were using was not reading right. Because this time they used 2 machines the one they always used said it was full of freon and then they checked it with another machine and it said it only had a 1/2 pound in it and it should have 2 pounds. So they checked the whole system for leaks and found none. So their conclusion is that everytime I have brought it in the machine was reading wrong. And also he did say that if the freon is low it will cause the symptons i was having. So if anyone is still having issues I would definately get the freon checked. Thanks for all your advice and we will keep you updated as to if it is fixed.
