Anybody with a Dana 60 rear in their Slick ever replaced seal?

I posted a thread on this in the Clutch/Xmission/Axle..... forum, but no responses yet and I need to move forward on this. Doing a rear brake job and I see on my '66 Camper Special it has a 3.54 traction lock Dana 60 in it! But, I think there may be some leakage of rear gear oil into the wheel hub area??? Anybody else have this issue? If so, it looks like I would have to remove the axles to replace a seal, but I've never done this type of work. How difficult is it? Do the axles pull out or do I need to open up the pumkin and release via some pin/bolt or whatever? Bearing(s) to replace?? Special tools?

Thanks,
daggerNC

Is it a 3/4 ton full floater, or a 1/2 ton 5 lug semi floater?

Must be 1/2 ton 5 lug semi floater. I went ahead and removed everything off the brake hubs and cleaned and then removed the 4 backing plate nuts (3/4"). I gave the axle shaft a couple of good tugs and to my surprise, it started coming out. Slide right out no problem and so did the other side!! A Ford guy I know had a hard time finding the correct seals and bearings as this rear diff didn't show up in his books. A local NAPA store found my setup and have ordered the bearing and seal(s). He's not sure if there are 2 seals (one in the axle shaft a couple of inches in, and maybe one in the front of the bearing cup - does anybody know?????) or one. I absolutely need a machine shop to remove the bearing bushing and reinstall the new bearings on a press. Still not clear to me if the inner seal was leaking or the bearing(+seal?) cup assembly is the culprit. Now those paper-like gaskets will be another fun adventure......

Dana 60's were an option on F100's 1961/72. The axles are 5 lug 5.50 bolt pattern.

All the Ford guy you know has to do, is look at the 1964/69 Rear Axle Application Chart in the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog:

Section 40.2; Page 2. Parts List # 173 = this is where the axle shaft seals & other related parts are listed. These parts are not listed under the rear brake drum and hub chart: Section 11.

Illustration of rear axle and related parts: Section 40, Page 6.

Illustration shows: Axle shaft / axle bearing outer retainer / OIL SEAL / axle bearing and race / axle bearing lock ring / AXLE SEAL / gasket / shim

Gaskets are: C6TZ-1001-A. Can't find them? No problemo...these are easy to make, all you need is gasket paper and a small hammer. With the axle shaft out, put the gasket material up against the axle housing, and gently tap away with the hammer.

>>> C8TZ-1177-A .. Inner Rear Axle Seal <<<

>>> C6TZ-1181-A .. Outer Rear Axle Seal <<<

As usual Bill - THANK YOU. I'm still a little confused about the inner and outer seals. My GUESS is that there is a seal (which would be the outer one?) inside the bearing cup which I can't verify until I get a machine shop to remove the pressed-on bearing retainer ring and then I can remove/inspect the axle bearing. If I got that right, then the "inner" seal must be the ones I just removed yesterday that are about 3"-4" into the axle housing.

I will need 2 paper gaskets per side - one on each side of the backing plate. Not sure how that hammer trick with gasket paper works? The impact fine cuts this type of paper along the edges including the bolt holes? Cool if that's how it works! Of interest is that I see on the left side no shims, but on the right axle between the axle shaft flange and the backing plate there are about 6 or 7 of them?! I also noticed that this right side might have been removed once before because the inner seal looks like a replacement (orange color and no markings) but the left side (with worse leak) looks original and has part numbers on it. I'll assume it goes back in exactly the same way with all those shims......

Thanks again,
David

If your partsman friend has the parts catalog, give him the refs I typed above. Then you can see exactly what the set up is. You can buy your own 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog on a CD = hipoparts.com

Gasket making = lay the gasket paper against the housing. Tap the paper where it lays on the inside of the housing, and the outside. The hammer will cause the paper to split open along the edges. Then then you can cut out the rest with a scissors. When you own the old rolling piles of misery I do, making gaskets is a way of life...especially for cars that haven't been made in 70 + years. I asked a guy at NAPA once (jokingly) for a head gasket for a 1934 Packard V12, he said.."What's a Packard?"

Hmm, my NAPA guy informed me he's having problems locating the actual new bearings. He's got the inner and outer seals and races, and gasket paper - every thing else I need. Anybody know where to source these Dana 60 bearings?

As a backup I may have to just clean, repack and reuse them. Both the machine shop guy and the NAPA parts guy said they still "feel good". What's the risk??

Thanks.

Dug this one up as I have to do this as well. I have oil leaking into the brake drum, so the inner seal needs to be replaced. I crawled under there today and I saw what looks like an 80 stamped onto the casing. Could it be a dana 80 or are my eyes fooling me?? C5IA-VI and 2815-1?? were on the tag bolted to the cover. Do these sound like right numbers? Just want to order the right seal. Thanks for the help.

according to wikipedia, the first application was in 1988. is it possible that it was swapped in. Just to clarify, is this axle a 5 lug semi-floater, or an 8 lug full floater?

You copied the code wrong, since you have a 1966 F250 4WD .. this is the closest match I can find: C5TA-V1 = Spicer/Dana 44 Front Driving Axle / 4.55-1.

With the C5 (1965) prefix, it cannot be a Dana 80.

Sorry big perm, its an 8 lug full floater.

Bill, I don't think I copied them wrong, I just can't see them very well...even with my dollar store readers on...lol Those numbers go to a front axle, but this is a rear. Maybe someone switched the tag or put it on by mistake?? Nothing surprise's me with this truck anymore...

Assuming that C5TA-V is correct, if the 2nd digit of the suffix is: A - B - C - D - E - T - U = these are all Dana 60's.
