Front Coil Springs

I have a 77 150 4x4 Shortbox the PO had some sort of spacers in he front coil springs. 3 spacers in each spring. was this to get body lift? I like the stance of the truck but I'd rather do a small lift if need be after restoration the proper way. If it was to stiffen the springs. How heavy of a spring can I go in this truck.

If it was the metal 1/4 turn things, it was to gain a little height. Trailmaster used to make some 2" lift coils, or you could get poly spacers from energy suspension.
