$70 per hour

My local Ford dealer wants to charge my wife $70 per hour to replace the e-brake shoes on my 02 F-150. Does this sound reasonable? Yes, i could do the work myself, but i am deployed. Anyone know of a better place to get this type of work done? They say it is going to take 2 1/2 hours so $180 according to dealership math.

70.00 an hour is very cheap. The price sounds right. My local dealer charges 119.00 an hour.

MY wife is in North Carolina where i am stationed, and since it is a military town i figured the prices were inflated. The car prices are seriously inflated because of all of the 18 and 19 year olds running around with money to spend...

Shop rates here are $65-$75 an hour, all depends on your local cost of living.

In Saskatchewan Canada the dealer is $100.00 an hour.

Even with the American $ being a tad more it is about the same.

rate isn't absurd, but the time they are wanting to charge you is.....does not take 2.5 hrs to do them, especially since the dealer will replace the whole back plate and they are pre assembled.....all they have to do is take off wheels, take off brakes and rotors, then remove park brake assly. I did mine( I just removed them did not replace them) in under 45 mins and I had never worked on the rear brakes before at that time. I did that because they seized up and broke the face of the brake off and made an evil noise.

You're getting off easy on both numbers. Book time to do that job is 3.2 hours for both sides. We're an independent shop and our rate is $80 and change.

How are you planning to remove the back plate with the axles in the housing? It still doesn't add up to the time they are suggesting, but it is what it is. As a mechanic you take the good with the bad, and as a customer you do the same. There are plenty of 2.5 hour jobs out there that only pay 45 minutes. It's a two way street. As an independent I can adjust labor times to be more representative of what it actually takes when I beat the time by a large amount, but being able to do jobs in under book time is about the only way some techs, myself included, get a raise. As we get better we make more money even though our hourly rate is the same.

guess i didn't think about that- I haven't looked at it in a while. My parking brake has been off for 4 years or better, and last time I did rear brakes was well over 2 years ago. To get the back plate off you would have to take out the axle shafts, and that would add a little more time/cost. I didn't take my back plates off just took the shoes off the back plates.

Good thing my clutch is sturdy!

the best place to keep the e-brake shoes is in th elocal trash can. my 150 did not fail yet, bu the explorers are long gone. dont buy new, just scrap them.

You must be close to camp lejune, or fort Bragg, I would say $70.00 an hour is average for this state...And most dealers near milatary Bases should Be fair, and might even offer discounts, I would have her ask..
