Brake question

My rear brake lines rusted through on my 87 a few months ago I had a very light pedal but the truck would stop. Now I know that the front and rear brakes are on different systems, so shouldnt the front still have worked? The same thing happned on my mothers Cadillac this week. The rear lines rusted through (its a 97, thats always garaged, who'd have thought) But I picked it up from her house and drove it to mine (only 7 blocks) and I had the slightest amount of pedal the whole time. Again shouldnt the front brakes have been working? I thought this was taken care of way back in the day when Dual reservoir master cylinders came out. Or am I just stricken with bad luck? The front brakes on the caddy and the bronco are fine ( good pads, rotors, no leaks, front reservoir full) What the heck is going on here???

if the lines were plugged at the master cylinder then yes the front should work but if they arent and fluid is leaking then the master cant hold pressure so no brakes.
