the $350 bronco i just bought ended up having a 429/460 and i didn't even notice until I went to put exhaust gaskets on it. interesting find....4 speed and a/c included.
79 with 9". The 460...unles pre '72 and/or 'built' isn't that intimidating. In '72 the most powerful ford engine was the 351c 4v (cj) and it only put out 265hp.
I'm a fan of the 400 as with new technology and parts it's easy and relatively inexpensive to get 380 hp and 450ftlbs out of it and it has the 4" stroke for low end grunt. I built a 400 for my newly aquired '75 f25 4x crew cab that will burn propane and make about the same. Got lucky and paid $900 for the cc which is my dream truck...so I'm happy right now.
Obviously i can fiddle with the 460 but would need to spend $ to get it to where the 400 can be. I had a '79 with a 429 that was ***** to the wall exciting. it needed 95 octane so i had to drive it retarded a bit with 92pump and it still impressed all.

'79 your probably right since it's already in...but definitely not if your making the conversion. But what would it cost to comnpletely rebuild a 460 to make 400hp 450ftlbs...(machine work to include line bore as weel as the normal stuff) and then the kit and time to put it in a 400 bay? I can do it for under 2k (upper cabin parts)with the 400 and not have to screw with the mods...and have a lighter engine and a longer stroke, flatter torque curve and 15-25% better mileage.
IMO the 385 is only best when going for huge numbers. If you want performance in the neighborhood of 400hp/450 torque then no way would I put a 385 over the 400 (unless I want to spin...then the 429 would be my answer). Most (not you) haven't spent the time updating themselves on the 400 and think of it as the old boat anchor with few options. I'm not a 460 fan as I'm not out for a 500ci+ stroker making 700+hp and anything under 500 is better done in a lighter engine...IMO. Having it in the bronco is ok...will make it sale for more or who knows. I am really interested in the 351c stroked to 400 with alum heads that weighs in at 417# - 479hp 489ftlb.
NUMBERDUMMY: Thanks for correcting me....I was going off the available motors for the torino as i have a '72 351cj...they didn't offer the 429cj for the torino but everything else was so I thought they quit making the 429cj in '71.
Man I love this site...can't bs anyone w/o getting your head yanked out yer hiney.
Is that a 71-74 351c or the later 351-400m. For the money give me a 460 out of a 71 or earlier lincoln. Had one in a 72 F250 with 10.5 ft. camper, loved gutter racers never got beat. Ran 87 octane all the time
the earlier 460's do have some grunt...I'm going to tune this thing and see what I can get out of it. It does have a 4bbl intake and carb...but it's a bit bedraggled and used up. it had the dirtiest air filter i've seen and no exhaust gaskets.
