I'm wanting to install a temp. gauge & not depend on the factory gauge. Can I leave the factory gauge in & install the new gauge in another location. The thermostat housing doesn't have a threaded plug so I can't go there. Is there any other locations on the block?
I seen a thread about a T that slips into the heater hose line but the directions with the guages says they must be mounted where water circulates around the probe to get accurate temp. Using a T the probe wouldn't reach to the circulating water. I know it probably wouldn't matter that much but the reason for a temp gauge is to know the accurate temp.
Is the temp sending unit located on the passenger side of the motor toward the rear of the engine about 1/2 way down the block?
another location. The thermostat housing doesn't have a threaded plug so I can't go there.
My 89 I6 has a threaded plug in the thermostat housing. That would be the the accuracy you're looking for. I picked up the housing at a local parts store ($15) after dropping and splitting mine on the concrete.
If you're looking for an accurate reading, find a housing with a threaded plug. Or make a plug yourself!
