Hello All;
I am chasing an electrical gremlin all over my truck. I have a 1997 250HD with a 460, used for towing. The problem I am having is with brake lights. I have brake lights on the truck but I do not have a right (passenger side) light on the trailer. I have determined the problem is not in the trailer, it is in the truck. I have been testing the truck starting at the plug with no sucess. The one pole on the truck is dead. Looking at the wiring harness, I have two harnesses in the same loom running back to the rear of the truck, one for the truck and one for the trailer plug. As I stated earlyer, the truck lights are fine, just the trailer lights are problematic.
Any ideas on where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Your truck probably has a factory tow package with trailer circuits seperated from the truck circuits. There should be a seperate fuse box for the trailer and various other things located under the hood on the drivers side about 10" in front of the firewall. It is approx. 6" wide and 9" long. Find the blown fuse and you will be good to go!
There's not gonna be one fuse for just one tailight. If it's a blown fuse, you would have zero power going to the trailer plug. Sounds alot like a bad ground somewhere. So I assume you hooked your trailer up to some other vehicle and it worked fine? Check the ground right at the plug on your bumper and then look for any possible corrosion in the system...wires that have been rubbed through or stressed.
Thanks for the advise all. I found the #6 fuse was burnt. I am hoping that this solves the problem. I have changed the fuses but have not hooked back up to the trailer.
