i have a 96 f150 with auto locking hubs. the problem i am having is that 4x4 is not working. it is going into 4x4 but the front wheels are not turning. any solutions?...thanks
do you have electronic shift or manual shift for the transfer case the electronic has an electric motor that engages the transfer case that gives trouble the manual has a floor shifter that goes directly to the transfer case if you are sure the t-case is engaging the next step is your auto hubs usually one gets weak{big springs inside } and gives you trouble look at these things first
yea i kinda figured it was the hubs cuz all i have heard is that the auto hubs are junk...but i dont really know how to clean or do wat ever i need to do to them....any place i can go to give details of how to take them apart and clean?
you really cant take apart the hubs and clean them. They are made of a porous stone that lets the vacuum from the motor penetrate slightly and its the engine vacuum that operates the hubs. You should check if the vac lines going to the wheels are intact and connected ON BOTH SIDES. One side wont cut it. Also new auto hubs are about $300/piece whereas manuals can be had for $100/pair and the manuals wont go bad nearly as fast as the autos, but you do lose the convenience.

What ford auto hubs you working on . No 90's truck I worked on had vacuum lines.
But yes if your auto hubs are giving you fits put in manaul ones. Once the auto hubs start to fail they can cause some pricey problems. You can take them off and clean with mystery oil. But you are half way to puting reliable hubs on. I run the autos on my road truck (Its hard to stop on interstate when a sudden storm hits. ). But I carry a chain in winter as I know if I'm stoped and have to start out they probably wont work .But pervious owner spent $400.00 on em just before I bought truck .
If put manuals on list old ones on eBAY they are going for nutty prices.
