I was replacing my rear diff cover yesterday, and before I started working on it, I was going to lower the spare tire to give me a little more room to work. Well guess what I don't have? The key that goes onto the end of the extension rods so I can unlock the spare tire to lower it. [img][/img]
I looked in the owner's manual to see where it was located, and the manual stated that it was in the glove box. This truck is an '02 and I bought it used last year, so naturally that key is MIA.
I called the local Ford parts department to see if I could pick up a new one and the parts guy said the whole lock assembly needs to be replaced. It would cost around $40. Does this make sense to anyone or is this guy just jerking my chain?
I just went through this, on my '06 but it should be the same thing. First thing you need to do is identify which key fits your lock. There are 15 or so different ones. Some Ford dealers have the master set and they just match it up by looking at it and trying a few, then they give you the part number. That's the hard part, getting the right part number. My dealer had the master kit. If your doesn't, call some different dealers. BTW, my parts department didn't even know that they had it. But the service advisor did, and the shop foreman had it locked up in his office. So ask some questions until you find who has it. Once you have the number you just call McGard and order it for about $25 plus s/h. I paid for 2 day delivery and the bill was $40. McGard is at www.mcgard.com, but I don't think you can order the key from the web site. You can get the phone number there anyway.
On the other hand, if you have a dealer who will replace the whole thing and get you a key for $40, then that might be the way to go. But that doesn't sound right to me.
Lot's of previous threads here on this, so do a search. Some guys prefer to just get rid of the need for a lock and the how-to is available.

I had to go thru this with my '03. I put a post up on an earlier thread somewhere on the forum, but in any case, I had my service dept. at my dealership go thru their 13 or so different spare tire keys. Finally found the right one and they ordered a new one for me. Typically it would have cost me $25 or so, but since the owner of the dealership knows me and all the guys in the service dept know me, I didn't have to pay a cent. Now I have one and it sits in my glove box. Just FYI!
FYI, at least on a super cab '06, can't speak for any other years, your jack handle pouch has a slot that fits the key nicely. Once I got mine that's where I put it, not in the glove compartment. Makes a lot more sense, and I think it's less likely to go walkabout.
Regardless, all you Super Duty owners out there, it's midnight - do you know where your spare tire key is?
Bill
Yea, getting a flat tire is a PITA, but your day will go from bad to worse if you don't have that key.
A lot of guys just get rid of the lock and then your jack handle works without any key. But my brother had his spare tire and wheel stolen from an airport parking lot, so I know it happens. Los Angeles donchaknow. So I like having the lock.
Guys complain about the super duty lock, but my last truck was an '04 F150. It has a locking insert or plug kind of thing that just goes in a hole in your bumper. Your door key fits it, which is nice, but the first time I used it I left the dang thing on the bumper after changing the tire and drove away. In a hurry and rattled because of the flat and all. It's up in the Sierra mountains if anyone wants it. So that method has it's drawbacks too.
I had the same problem as you. I bought a used truck and the first flat I did not have the key to get the spare down. Went to dealer had same problem, they did not have the keys. Got the phone number for the lock company and called them. They said take a picture of the end of the lock down the tube. Sent them the picture via e-mail and they sent me the key, $22.
This thread should be another reminder for everyone to check and see if their key is in the glovebox. Also, if you have the key and it still has the little card in it, fill it out and send it in. That way if your key ever gets lost they have a record of what key matches your VIN number.
