Yea, I checked dipstick before changed, and only pulled 5 qt's out.

I even cranked engine a few times to get the oil out of the pump this time.

Makes no sence?

And why does my 02 5.4 (i forgot) take 7 qt's when its rated for 6?

Oil filter takes up about 1/2 quart or so. It doesnt really run back into the pan because of the angle the filter is on. If you are talking about your truck in your signature, it should only take 5 qts plus a filter full.

It has to be leaking out or burning off. Thats the only way to explain loosing oil. If its not leaking, you may have a bad head gasket or something.

Like i said previously.
I checked the dipstick before i changed oil. It was full.

every truck seems to loose a little bit of oil due to break down.
I'm not burning or loosing it.

So where does that extra qt go?

Weigh your new & drained filter, then compare.

Also a lot of violates in oil evaporate off. The baked on crud remains, plus the amount that remains as sludge.

Imagine also a candle as it burns away. You never see the smoke from it, but all that mass is gone.

Yes.

but think about this logically.

Truck holds 6 qts full.

You check dipstick. Dipstick says full, that means there is 6 qts.

You drain oil, get 5 qtz.
That means there is an extra qt in there.

Where is my missing qt?

Okay, yes your theory is plausable. But if there is gunk, or sludge remaining.
That means i will only be able to put 5 qt's back in. When i refill, takes 6 qts.
I'm running seafoam in there also, so there is no crud, or sludge. The oil looks like dark honey comming out, not even black, or crude looking.

So, how can you drain 5, but put 6 in?
Makes me think engine holds 7.
And you always have a qt in there even when you drain, thus getting 5, and when you add six back, 1+6 = 7.
