Seeing the price of actual breakout boxes, I'd like to build my own, but I'm having a REALLY hard time finding EEC-IV connectors!
Does anybody know either:
the "trademake name" for the type of connector used on the EEC-IV? (You know, the 60 pin bolt-mated connector)
The manufacturer of the connector Ford used on the ECC-IV
I know there are some breakout boxes on Ebay for somewhat less than retail prices, or I could rip apart a harness and EEC unit from the junk yard to get the connectors!
A breakout box is a device that would connect between the engine wiring harness and the computer. It allows the operator to measure voltages and resistance in the many circuit. Very usefull to diagnose sensor/actuator/valve troubles, especially intermittant problems 'cos it can be used while the engine runs or even while driving!
They typically retail at more than $700, and can be found used on eBay for usually no less than $100 (And add to that shipping costs!) If I can buy the connectors for 50$, and since my time isn't worth much while I'm on holidays, I figured I'd build my own.
Those ECU connectors are what is referred to as "propriertary"....you won't have much success getting the company to even talk to you on that matter.....that's why it cost's so much for a breakout box....only a higher end repair guy would buy such an item .....hoping the volume of use will justify the initial cost.....a breakout box is not actually needed to troubleshoot.......but it does make thing's easier......I allway's said that the reason why the repair manuals stated "do not back-probe " the connector was an attempt to make you buy another tool..........our trucks in this forum are at least 10 years old now........why wouldn't you back-probe the connector ?
Hmmm.. You make a good point, Phillip. Back-probing is definitely an option, although it would be rather combersome (in fact, quite painfull in my E150) , which is why I wouldn't mind getting a breakout box.
