Does the EDGE EVOLUTION really make this much power?

I am looking into getting the Edge Evolution programmer. I was reading an article in the spring 2007 issue of Ford Performance Trucks Magazine where they installed one on a 2005 F-150. In the article it says the Edge made an extra 50.8 horsepower and 53.7 lb-ft of torque in level 3. But on the box it clearly says it only makes an extra 35 horsepower???? Are the claims of this article highly over rated??? Or does it really make that big of a difference in the truck?

I doubt it if it made 50 extre horses The box would say 60 or so.

Seems about right if one claim is HP at the crank and one at the rear wheels.

Will it make a difference you can feel with your butt dyno? Yes, most likely it will.

Will it make it feel like the truck is suddenly huffing nitrous? Nope.

From what I've been reading, these tuner chips work better with a new cold air induction system installed. Which also adds another 4% mileage increase.

The AirforceOne cold air kit seems to be the go to choice also.

I can only say that I took mine out recently because of a bad cable, and I would have paid just about anything to get it back. I guess I didn't realize how much of a difference it really made. I got mine just before the price increase so it was a little easier to handle. As far as the HP numbers, I doubt many of us are going to dyno our trucks before and after installing an Edge, but for the fun factor and the gauges it is pretty much worth it.

Our advertisers need to do some maintenance; there's an ad on this page (ok, they rotate, but this one is from newtakeoff) that expired April 1st. Unless someone is running a 9 month sale?

That is a tough call. I bought mine before the price hike on April 1 and IMO it was a bargain at $350,now I guess it costs $450.For that price I would consider a custom tune. But if I did choose a custom tune I would miss the gauges on my Edge.

We still sell the EDGE tuners for less, right now at least.

Even 35hp is a nearly bogus claim for the edge, they are claiming that number of a humongous dip in the stock tune because of the torque management. One shouldnt be led to believe that that is a consistant gain across the band.

I still recommend custom tuning, for the price. You get much better tunes, and are vehicle specific, based on your needs and mods.

Forget HP numbers. If you ask Edge owners about how it makes the truck feel I'm sure your doubts will fade. I installed one in my 04 5.4 s-cab, and now I never take it out of level 3 tuning. Just the change in throttle response makes it feel more powerful, but fill it full of premium fuel, play with the timing and shift points, and stuff the skinny pedal on the right to the floor, and $450 is cheap entertainment. If your looking for serious power gains, and are adding other mods to the truck Bob is right on with the custom tune, but for a canned tuner on a semi-stock truck, the Edge is great.

I really only see myself making three performance mods to my truck. Cold air intake, tuner and cat back exhaust. But maybe some time in the future headers, but that is a big maybe. I just want to buy the parts that are gonna give me the best bang for my buck.

Bob,
Being a newb to tuners, could you go into depth a little as to what the advantages are going with the bama vs the edge.
If ya go with a bama tuner, im guessing then I also have to buy a tunefile?

I tried to find an older post where I had gone into it in depth but I couldnt...

What everything really boils down to is that the EDGE module can only access certain parts of your PCM to make changes. Our hardware allows to tinker with EVERY setting inside the PCM. What does this mean in a real world application? It means we can (and do) make any tweak possible that will increase power, or enhance driveability.

Also, you get three tunes included in the purchase, that will be custom tailored to your truck, and what you plan to do with it. What octane do you want to use? Are you looking for a performance tune? Torque tune? Towing tune? Whatever you are looking to do, we make specific changes that will tailor your trucks behavior to EXACTLY what you need it for. We can also take into account any other performance modifications, because believe it or not, you just arent getting their full potential on a stock, or even a canned tune (like the edge)

You could get a custom tune and have most of the monitoring capability of the Edge by using a DashHawk.
