Question 300 power diffence over the years

this question might sound dumb, but was there any difference in performance of the straight 300 through the 60's to the 80's?

I think the main difference was when they switched from carburator to EFI the power and torque went up. I don't have the numbers but seems it was around 120 hp for carb and 140-150 hp for EFI.

HMmmmm I had a 66 Custom 500 sedan with a 240/auto, which was kinda slow, but the owners manual listed HP for the engines, if I recall correctly, the 240 was listed at 150. The 427...listed quite a bit higher.

There was a change in there somewhere in the way they were rated. I think the switch was from gross hp to net hp figures.

It varies. Carbed one bbl is 120 hp, that would be pre 1987. The EFI engines have either different rating methods, or there are actually two different engines. One being 140 hp and the other is 160 hp. Interestingly, they are both listed for my 1994 Ford F-150...Go figure. idk what the defining differences are.

it is 1977 so it is probably only pulling 120 but thanks

the pre-'72 ones were rated at 170 hp@ 3xxx rpms and 284 tq @ 1600 rpms. they were rated differently than '72 and later ones so i dont know how much the different rating system would effect power ratings.

Pre 72 engines were rated at gross horsepower with no tranny, emissions, or accessories on the engine. After that it became a form of net horsepower on a stand with accessories, emissions and a tranny feeding into a dynomometer. That has since changed with some calibrations being changed to "better" reflect the real world of the auto/engine that it is to be installed in. The last change was made as a result I believe in the Mustang Cobra 300 hp rating debacle in 1999 (?).
