Which gears would be best???

I have a 98 f150 4.6 reg 5-speed 2wd. I have a 3 in body and 3 in spindle lift. I am running 305/70/16 nitto terra grapplers, which gives me a wrong speedometer reading. A tuner will not fix that problem because they work with 99^ f-150s. My question is which speedo gear would i need and is it hard to install? I think i have 3.55 gears, they make me feel like i ride the clutch whenever i tow anything! Which gear for the rear end should i get 4.10 or 4.30. I still do alot of highway driving going to college and back so i was hoping that one of these gears will give me better gas milleage too. With addition to the gears i was wondering if i should get some type of traction lok of some sort because i like to go offroad every once in awhile and it should help me when i tow. I would like to know what type of rear end i have.....this is what i pulled off of the rearend tag.

first line: S8698 R
second: 3L55 88 8C02

I dont now if the 8's are B's......

Thanks alot for any help.

You have a 3.55 Limited Slip 8.8" Rear differential. Either the 4.10 or the 4.30 gears will be a big improvement. Your front axle will use reverse cut gears and both axles will need to geared alike. Other FTE users will chine in with more information soon. Have a safe and happy 4th!

4.10's. Yes, that is for a 4x4. You only need the rear done.

I would go with 4.30. I have 35" tires and 4.56 and its great for city driving and pulling the boat out of the water. I'm turning 2500 rpm at 70 mph. Since you'll be doing highway driving I would recommend the 4.30. 4.10 will put back close to stock.

On a side note. Higher rpm doesn't mean lower mpg. I gained 2 mpg changing my gears out.

Id agree with putting 4.30 gears in it. You will need that gearing to spin those big tires, especially considering your truck only has a 4.6L in it.
As far as what you could buy to keep both wheels spinning together, you could look into an air locker, but I think Id maybe try to find a limited-slip rearend for your truck.

Exclamation

fyi - i run 4.56s w/ 35s and it basically put me right back @ stock.

if hes gonna run 305s - i would go with 4.56s for a gear ADVANTAGE...and 4.10s or 4.30s to get back to stock.

Well if I put 4.56 and I already have limited slip, would I need ANYTHING ELSE to make my 2wd vehicle hard to get stuck in the mud? I just hate how i tow my boat out of a dirt boat ramp and the tire that is touching the ground doesnt spin and the one stuck does

i still want good gas milleage for the highway so would 4.56 still be good. and i want my truck to be as close to 4x4 as possible so would that mean getting a locker?

Thanks alot for the input! Now this will be the last thing besides the other couple posts i just put up. All i need to no now is everything i need to take to leroy's 4x4 for the install. I want both my rear wheels to be givin equal power, but I already have a limited slip. I want alot more power but still want the gas milleage. If I get 4.56, will they fit in the carrier? I just dont want to get stuck with a part that wouldnt work.

yep.
a locker is the best way to go. i have a detroit and it - is - AWESOME!!!

with 4.56s and 35s your new favorite speed will be 65 mph!! (that will give you the best mileage) - you can still go 100 mph if you like...but how often do you need to go 100 mph in a truck?
