If the Heating/cooling control dial is turned to the right in any setting regardless of the temperaturesetting the A/C compressor runs.
Now I can understand the compressor running when trying to defrost the windshield, but not driving down the road in the winter heating the cabin.
So far the Dealer has said this is normal operation to keep the seal from drying out and failing on the compressor. Sound like a great way to sell compressors to me.
What say you?
Thanks in advance.

i was wondering the same thing. i have already replaced the compressor clutch. is there any reason it engages and disengages to often? i hear it click on and off a lot. is this normal?
Having the A/C running actually dries out the air. I'm not 100% positive in the 04 MY, but in my 02 (and in previous MY's) the only positions in which the A/C does not run is "Vent Only" and "Floor Only". And yes they do cycle more when not on the "A/C" or "Max A/C" positions. I assume it's to keep the air dry while still maintaining the heat level most girls seem to want.
I forgot to mention.
The owners manual says that "outside air comes in when these selections are made",
doesn't say anything about the compressor running.
Anybody have an early compressor failure?

the A/c has no drying function when heat is on only while cooling

It is normal operation. Probably 15 years back or so. It was done to keep the clutch from freezing up when not in use.
My concern is compressor reliability and fuel consumption.
I should add--I'm a HVAC mechanic. Hot deck/cold deck HVAC systems were energy guzzlers and went away after the oil embargo in the 70's.
Again - in either defrost mode compressor operation is desireable.
I just don't want the compressor running in heat only.

I would worry more about fuel consumpsion than compressor life
had one compressor I put 400k miles on with just removing one clutch shim was still going when truck sold
one on current truck 120k mi never touched
