351c specs

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Sep-02 AT 09:15 AM (EST)]It depends on which year 460, you want to compare the 351C to.The 351 Cleveland engines were offered from 1970-1974 in Mustangs,Torinos,Cougars, and Cyclones/Montegos.They were offered with both a 2V,or 4V carb. Here are some specs : 250@4,600rpm(351C 2V),300@5,400rpm (351C 4V)The 351C 4V also had 11.0:1 compression....not good to run on 93,or lower octane pump gasoline of today's standards. In '71 the horsepower was re-rated to 240@4,600rpm (2V)(9.0:1 compression),285@5,400rpm(4V) (10.7:1 compression). In 1972,Ford went with net horspower ratings,as opposed to brake horsepower ratings. All engines also got a drop in compression ratios. The 351C 2V ratings :163@3,800rpm/8.6:1 compression, 351C 4V :248@5,400rpm/8.6:1 .There was also a "Q code" 351C 4V(also called a "351 Cobra Jet").Horsepower rating for this engine was 266@5,400rpm.The 1973&1974 351C engines continued to get different ratings. The 351CJ 4V in '73 still was rated at 266 net horspower. In '74 it got a compression ratio drop to 7.9:1,but still had a net horspower rating of 255@5,600rpm. Now for the 460s. The 1968-1971 460 was rated ate 365bhp@4,600rpm/500 lb.-ft.of torque@2,800rpm/10.5:1 compression. In 1972,like all engines,it got a cut in compression, and a net power rating. The 1972 460 rating was 212 net horsepower@4,400rpm/8.5:1 compression.(some 460s had 8.0:1)Basically the 460 from '72-'79 had horsepower ratings ranging from 212-220 horsepower@ 4,400rpm in cars, and 239@4,200rpm in trucks(mid-'73-'79).The 460 was still wearing a 4V until April of '87,when Ford gave it EFI. The late model EFI460 engines generally have horsepower ratings of 230(net)@3,600rpm/390 lb.-ft.of torque@2,200rpm/8.5:1 compression,or 245(net)@4,000rpm/400lb.ft. of torque@2,400rpm/8.5:1-8.8:1 compression. The 351C is a nice rev-happy engine, with good top end horsepower, but when it comes to pulling a heavy vehicle around, such as a big car, or truck, you'll need gobs of low end torque, which a 460 has.A 460 can be built-up to do just about anything you ask of it,yet still be reliable, and run on low octane pump gas.The 460 also has more aftermarket & replacement parts available for it than the 351C.
