I had similar erratic idle and "check engine" problems last year on my 96 F250 and it was diagnosed as the wiring harness in the valve cover gasket. This sounded bizarre to me, but no more problems after it was replaced.....
Well, "Expert" #2 bit the dust today. He can't figure it out either. His suggestion is to install a HPOP and see what happens. I'm gonna go drive it home in the "limp" mode Monday and start tinkering with it myself I guess....
Have you checked the fuel system for a plugged filter or kinked line....Not trying to be a smart *** but from time to time even the best engine guys can miss the obvious "bread and butter" checks sometimes....Poor performance under heavy fuel loads when an engine idles and runs ok under moderate loads could be one of many things. Maybe a trip to an IH dealer would be the cheapest route for the troubleshooting.
Triple Ford Guy, here's the thing. I can start the truck up (doesn't fire off immediatly like it used to) and run it hard down the road for about a mile with no problem. Turn around and head back to the shop just cruising and suddenly the cel comes on and the engine de-rates. When it happened Saturday I thought it had to be temp related. The temp gauge was just getting up to the o in normal. However, when I got back to the shop, turned it off and restarted the cel was off and it would rev per normal. The temp was then up at the middle of the gauge. Like you, I thought maybe it only happened under a load so I dropped it in gear and held the brake while I brought the engine rpms up for about 2 minutes. Nothing! No cel, no de-rate, nothing. Oh, changed the oil and filter just in case. Didn't help.
Pull your valve covers... The wiring harness is at the top of them. Inspect where the plug is and also where they attach to each injector. Be careful not to break the tabs.
We were having an almost identical problem that you are describing. Austin Fuel and Injection (After the Ford Dealership told us we needed a new motor) were the ones who pointed out this problem.... Bingo ! ! ! Under a $100.00 fix....... I do not guarantee this is your issue, but it's something easy to check.
Talked to a guy today that keeps up the 7.3s in the ambulances in a nearby city and told him what was going on with my truck. He says he will "Bet me $5.00 that it's an injector o-ring that is letting oil bypass back into the pan". Says he has seen it before. I figure what the heck. It needs o-rings anyhow with all those miles on it. Went and picked my truck up from the shop where mechanic #2 has been working on it. Drove it home (about 10 miles). No cel until I really kicked her in the a$$ just before I got home. Didn't have much power though and was hard to start when I left his shop. Also had a little different sound from the injectors every now and then. Going to local international dealer tomorrow and get the o-rings. Can somebody refresh my memory on how to clear the oil from the rails in the heads before pulling the injectors?
