port & polish question

I'm thinkin about porting and polishing my factory heads for my 351w. My question is will this gain me anything in building my engine for low end torque as its going in a 4x4. If I do this will it hurt my bottom end torque? I don't want to lose anything on the bottom end.

thanks in advance,
scott

port & polish question

Think of it two ways there is flow and velocity. Both are desirable. Opening up the ports will increase overall flow capability. As a by-product the larger size of port will slightly decrease velocity at lower flow. The thing is though you are dealing with stock heads. I seriously doubt you could get them big enough to significantly lower velocity. You will probably see a increase in both horsepower and torque.

In other words go for it. I think you're gonna like the results.

I agree that it is probably impossible to open up stock heads enough(especially the later castings) to notice a loss in low end performance. the idea is not really to make the ports larger, but to just smooth out sharp corners in the castings to reduce the turbulance of the air passing through. This will probably increase low end torque rather than lower it.
