Im not sure Im posting this in the right area but Ill try. I have to replace my ball joints on my front end this week and the ford dealership and some other shops want about $1000 to do it. I got the prices for all the parts and it comes up to about 350$ so I was thinking of doing it myself. Anyone got any advice I have never done it before. Thanks
Zach- ball joints are a PITA!! But the money you save doing it yourself will justify spending more on mods! Give yourself a whole day to do it, and I'd look up Guzzle's mod pag, as he has a few things you can do while you're doing your ball joints, like some PM to your hubs and ESOF system. You will need a ball joint fork tool to get the spindles off, basic hands tools and hopefully you won't need to use an air ratchet to get the u-joint nuts back on, as the u-joints sometimes spin...Have fun!
I just did them on a E450 van a while back. It requires some specialized tools but not $650.00 worth.
If you want to do the job yourself it's easy if you have the right tools and a nightmare if you do not.
Again, you could buy the tools for less than they want to charge you for labor
Best advice is to get those new wheel seals pressed on the axle shafts by a machine shop. I pissed away several hours trying to get them on myself with my own press, however i ended up taking them there.
I have done SOOO many ball joints.... these are probably my favorite to do as they dont have actual hubs to take apart, nor do they have taper roller bearings...
I have had a set of these done, upper and lower, both sides in 1 hour..... a ball joint press is a must though....
thanks guys your a great help. Ill let you know how it goes
contact some of your fellow IN members and host a wrench a thon over the weekend, or find a way to post some sign around the fair grounds on July 26th-29 and you will find a lot of FORD SD truck owners to help you out!
