Just got a factory tach for my 84. Has the printed ckt....but I'm not sure it's good, or the correct Number. I seem to remember it takes a certain circuit. My truck has the gauges...Is there any way to wire from the 4 posts on the tach...and not use the printed ckt. ?....Thanks...Jv
If you have the gauges, congrats, it's plug and play.
One exception, I believe the 1980 circuit was different so if your tach is an 80, could be more work.
It came from an 85...and I have the gauges..Is it much of a job to pull the dash panel out ? I don't see anything on the printed ckt. that would plug in..or out , for that matter...EOTF-10C956 is on ckt. The board is attached to the tach with 4 nuts....and has what looks to be a resistor wired in. I'm afraid this is out of my league.....j
Not sure what difference there is between 1980 and 1985-86, but I took out a tach from an 85 and put it in my 86 f150.
There was no provision for wiring the tach in my truck, but the cluster did accept it no problem.
The wiring consisted of a hot-in-run, ignition coil signal, and ground. If you have a 6 cyl engine, than thats all you need, if you have a v8, you will need to connect the second ground (labelled G8) otherwise the tach will track too high.
From what I can gather from old posts..the part # should start with E1 instead of EO. That was supposed to be correct, but such are the risks on Ebay...Anyone know for sure what the part #s should be..Mine is 84..351..auto...with gauges...Thanks again...j
1 have the 1980 it seems that every thing is different, i guess that it has something to do with the new model, there is a few things that interchanges but it is mostly susp, body and interoir.
The four contacts each had a label near them on mine (more like a code), and I was able to figure it out. Not sure if yours has this but it might be worth a close look on the back of the PC board that the contacts come through.
Here's how I wired mine up. The post on the rear of the tach labeled "1" should run to the "tach" post on your coil. The post labeled "8" is a ground IF you have a V8. If you have the I6, then leave this out. The post labeled "G" is a regular ground, and the post marked "B" is a switched hot wire. I had to wire mine this way due to a butchered electrical system from the previous owner. If your electrical system is intact, then try to just plug the whole instrument cluster in - it will probably work just fine.
I bought an instrument panel off eBay with a tach in it. The Ford PN came back as for 81-86 F150's. It has a 19 Pin connector but my 83 has a 16 pin connector. Seems like just obtaining a 19 pin connector would not necessarily work since it appears the 16 pin is not wired for a tach. So, should I assume that I can hard wire the tach direct as jmkelly suggest?
