which internally regulated alternator is a bolt in swap on a 78 460?? and what is the recommended wiring procedure??
I am not sure how to do it but I have seen several different applications where a Chevrolet one wire altenator was used on different Ford engines. I have also seen a Chevy one wire hooked up to a 3.5 HP Briggs and Stratton for a battery charger. Worked very well.
i use a gm 1 wire on a 460, made my own brakets and ran the wire to the positive cable, thats it. you have to drill the hole on the alternator larger to fit a larger diameter bolt, which screws into the head (7/16 i think), then fabricate a spacer. (be sure you dont get any of the drill shavings in the alt.) then buy or re-use your adjustment bracket. real simple, just be sure you have the correct belt alignment, so you wont throw belts. a 100 amp gm 1wire is cheaper, and easier to repair, as parts are more readily available. after 4 years, it has not let me down.
Hey why not just get the 100 map alt form a newer ford (82-88) adn change the serp. pulley to the v-belt and wire in the plug for the back of the alt. and your on your way. That is what i did and I have had no problems since. It still use the same volt reg. also.
theres a little box you can get and just make your ford altenator a (1 wire)altenator then you dont have to make a gm altenator fit. i've done 2 now 1 100 amp and a 60 amp try your local altenator shop and see if they can get it for you if not i'll see if i can get a part # from my altenator guy
thats what im trying to get away from, the wiring from the original VR.....
good info 79f150toy, is there any particular model chebbie i need to ask for???
One wire Delcotron alternators are used on boats and farm equipment. I doubt if they were ever used on highway equipment. You can change a 2/3 wire Delcotron over to one wire by changing to the correct internally excited regulator. Simple as cake, piece of pie. GRIN
Go to summitracing.com they have 1 wire alternators that use the original case and are a bolt in replacement. However the term "one wire" is used way to often in the wrong way. All you really want to do is switch to an internally regulated alternator. You can use a GM delco alternator on your ford with no custom brackets. All you need to do is drill out the lower mounting hole to 7/16''. But you still have 3 wires to hook up. The one wire setup is clean but not a good option for a daily driver. They don't turn on until 2,000 rpms.
