Anyone know why my wife's 94 escort (which broke down on the weekend) would be leaking engine oil from the boot next to the transaxle??
The #1 cylinder lost a valve last year and there is still a slight scratch causing blow-by (which ends up in the airbox). But out on an alberta highway we lost power and while lugging to the top of a hill the exaust gave out(after the cat. converter).
The motor still runs and the compression is 90lb to 160lb on #1 cyl. and 95lb to 180/185lb on the other cylinders.
My father-in-law has the car and can't find any oil leaks above that boot, and it's definetly engine oil! And a substantial leak.
The boot you are refering to is the CV boot and it isn't leaking engine oil. They take a special grease and it has probably has a hole in the boot and it is leaking out.
well ive never seen a 1.9 block crack. seen plenty of dropped valve seats and leakin head gaskets but no cracked blocks. i seriously doubt thats it. is it the outer boot or the inner that has the wetness on it? check the oil filter. they will **** oil all over the rt axle if its not tight enough. ive seen the cam and crank seals leak often too.
It's the inner boot(he said over the phone, he's got the car in another city).
He said that there is no oil above the boot, and no oil in the tranny fluid or coolant. He's a ticketed mechanic so when he asked me to post on the website I'm always telling him about I knew it must be something hidden! Is their any seal behind that boot that has engine oil behind it?
could it be the axl seal itself? the escorts trans fluid is usually very dark and can be mistaken for engine oil. is it wet where the axle goes into the trans??
Hey Lightning2fast, you were right buddy. What actually happened was the blow-by had gotten oil on the mass air sensor, which started the timing/power problems, then we figure the extra gas the injectors were releasing pooled in the cat. converter and when the oxygen sensor
told the EGR to open.....BOOOOOM!!!!!!!! The pressure from the explosion blew the converter apart, and the extra pressure must of expanded the oil filter cause there was a hairline crack that when the engine ran for awhile would spray directly onto the boot! But no oil stayed on the filter!
I have mercury tracer doing the same thing its the oil filling the air box leaking down and driveing down the road its spalashing on the axle boot making it look like its leaking oil
