Does anyone know what type of 4 speed tranny I can use to replace a borg-warner with a granny gear? Its a 68 with a 240 and a 3.70 rear end. Used mostly for freeway driving. Is there a tranny that will bolt up with minimum modification? I was told that a T-10 wouldnt fit correctly. What else is there?
A T19 it has a snchronized first and reverse that aren't so low. The cases are an exact match, but all of the internal pieces are swapable. So, instead of trying to swap tranny's you might want to try swaping 1 and reverse only and keeping the rest of your T18.
Another possibility for light duty use like a 6-cylinder in an F100 is what's often known as a Toploader Imposter. It's a fourspeed box that looks just like a Toploader and came in some Ford cars, trucks and vans in the late '70s. The difference is that it has an overdrive fourth gear instead of 1:1. Here's a little more info:
I don't know how hard they are to find as I've never looked for one. I did buy one by mistake thinking it was Toploader, and then I found the above info on them.
It wouldn't be too hard to swap in, I think it would bolt to your current bellhousing and then you'd need a 4-speed shifter and a driveshaft since the tranny would be longer than your present box.
those toploader inposters came in late 70's grandas. i had one of them behind a 429 in a granda.there not the most bulitt proof but they work just dont do no 5grand hole shots and itll be fine. also early 80's 1/2tons had a 3sp/od with the shifter comeing rite out the top they worked pretty good also my ol 80 f100 with a 300 had one.they'll both bolt to a standerd bell
You may have to do some research, but a newer New Process 435 may work for you. In some cases the shifter may sit a little further towards the front of the truck though.
