92 Ranger, 2.3, auto.
Here's my problem. Most off my driving is short distance, 4 miles to work. When I do happen to drive long enough for things to heat up my transmission blows tranny fluid out of the inspection plate. I'm thinking that it may be the front seal to the transmission or the torque convertor, not much else in there. What do you all think? Anything else it could be? And why only when it gets hot?
The first problem with A4LD appeared on my Aero. There is only 1 way to solve - drop a tranny, remove TC, polish TC surface, install new seal and put it back and enjoy. next 2-5 years problem will not appeare.
Talked to a transmission guy today. He said that it had spun the bushing and that when it gets hot the bushing expands and pushes against the seal which releases the fluid. He said it's a common problem on these transmissions. He says that he can replace the bushing, seal and torque convertor but only about 1 in 10 will work very long like that before the bushing spins again. Says that best way to do it is to change bellhousing since it is part of the pump or go all out with a rebuild.
He's feeding you a line of crap! I just pulled a tranny from a 91 ranger with the same problem. The problem is the seal itself. If the bushing was spinning like that guy claims, you would hear a whining noise. If the tranny was working fine, then I would pull the tranny and replace the front seal. For the sake of being cautious, we always pull the pump and check it over. We check the pump gears and the stub shaft on the tc. If everything looks good we reseal the pump, replace the bushing (even if it looks good, error on the side of caution and replace it while you have it apart), and put a new updated front seal in. We reuse the tc as long as the pan was clean and the tranny was working fine. Total cost should be $300-$500 depending on where you live.
Thanks for the heads up. I will check with a couple of more places and see what they say. If there is anyone I don't trust that is a transmission place.
