I plan to get a dp tuner, but am not sure which tunes to get. I won't be hauling anything to heavy, just a car every now and then. Do I need the F5 controller for anything other than the coolness factor? Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreatiated.
Basically if you want more than one program then yes, the controller is how you swap through them. Your other option is one program in your PCM.
While you say now "oh, I won't use that" man, get the tow modes, the econo, the race, or two weeks down the road you'll just want to send it back and have something added.
Yep i agree. You will sit and wonder why you didnt get X or Y program once you get it, so might as well get them all. here is mine- 0 is no start, 1 is stock, two is high idle, three is 40hp tow, 4 is 60hp tow, 5 is modified 80hp econo to a straight 80 without stock fuel tip-in, 6 is 120 race, 7 is 140 agressive (smoke), and 8 is lope idle. I have come to find out my truck makes the most boost and feels strongest on the 80hp tune than the higher ones. Its an oil injection pressure issue.
I went with 0-no start, 1-stock, 2-80 econo, 3-120 race. I'll probably add high-idle & 140 smoke when I send it back to get updated once I get my tranny done. Might even get the lope-tune for fun...
High idle is good for running high current accessories (like lots of lights, high-power amps, etc.), or keeping the AC cold/heater hot. That kind of stuff...
I went with 1-stock 2-60tow 3-80econo 4-120race and I wish I had purchased more! My brothers says I had to spend $1000 dollars just to keep up with his 2007 6oh.
You don't state where you live, and that is a fairly big deal when towing. If you live in a Mt state (Colorado, MT, ID, ect.) you will unquestionably need a F-5 when towing.
Example, This past weekend I was towing a light trailer (7500 lbs) up Baker grade in California. The temperature there was 111, and it is a long grade. I began the grade in the 60 tow setting, first dropped down to 40 tow, then to 20 tow, and kept the speed at 70 mpg, and the EGTs down to less than 1100
Personally, I have the No Start, 20, 40, 60 tow, 80 Econ, and 120 race. I will generally stay in 80 econ setting unless towing. When towing, I most often stay in the 60 tow mode unless on long steep grades, there I’m off & on the F-5 keeping the EGTs down.
