Ok... nuther question...
What to paint the frame with... I'm thinkin simple black... but saw an ad here for some anti-rust paint... $125 a gallon.... yikes... is that the way to go?
What are my options?
(No, I'm not ready to paint, by a long shot... but I like to think stuff through and do the homework in prep...)
Read the post about someone who cobbled their first ride together... wow.. WOW that's what keeps us goin... can't wait.
Man $125 is kinda up there, but i've heard of people using POR or something like that. Not to sure myself. Sorry I'm not to much of a help, but I'm kinda new on some of this stuff also.
POR 15 the stuff is awsome and well worth the price. It is very important to follow the instructions on the can. The stuff dries rock hard, you will have problems cutting it with a DA sander (no kidding). It is perfect for frames. It is not desighned for exposure to sunlight however so any parts exposed to the sun will need to be topcoated with something else.
Like F6guy, I'm a big fan of POR15 but I have never used zero rust. My only thought is that you only get one chance in a frame off to fix it right. And like almost any paint project, the paint cost, even $100+ per gallon isn't much compared to the labor.
First when your frame is ready use Por 15 Metal Ready to prep the metal, then use Por 15 Rust Preventative coating either siver or black (don't get any on you as it does not come off). After that use Por 15 Chassis Coat, you can get flat, semi or gloss, this needs to go on within a certain time of the rust preventative coating as it gets too hard for anything else to bond to it. I did my frame 5 years ago and it has been in the garage with stuff piled on it, I have dropped things on it and hit it hard with tools with no mark. Por 15 has a good web site with some info.
Hope that helps but the most important thing is proper preperation.
Getting ready to do my 55 frame and will use POR gloss black, it is brushable and looks like glass when dry and a little goes a long way. Just don't get it on your hands........it is permanent, yes I learned that the hard way when I did my motor.
