the thing vibrates like a hoor at and past 100km/60mph. Theres a tinging that sounds like a sloppy U-joint. I crawled under and couldnt find the bad U-joint so I got the gf to shift between drive and reverse repeatedly so I could inspect the situation. The problem: the driveshaft will rotate about 1/8th turn before the bronco starts to move. There is no oil leakage or slop around the pinion, it doesnt rattle down the road so Im stumped as to what it could be. The diff is a 3.55 limited slip 8.8" unit in my 87 bronco. Does anyone have any idea what it could be. My best guess is the ring and pinion gear are worn but that doesnt sound very accurate to me.
Before you tear apart your rearend...have your driveshaft thrown on a lathe and balanced. That driveshaft is 20 years old and might have developed a bit of a wobble over the years. A driveshaft balance shouldn't cost more than $70.
If your U-joints were really shot...you'd hear a significant "clunk" as you shifted in and out of Drive or Reverse. Also, just as you began to accelerate your back end would shudder.
Check the driveshaft balance before you cuss out your rearend!
That play in the driveshaft is most likely because of worn spiders or side gears.
Also, just because the u-joints don't have play in them doesn't mean they're not bad. When you park it, you put a lot of tension in the driveline and sometimes it's not evident that they're worn. It would be a good idea to go ahead and replace them anyway. It's not hard to do and it probably needs it anyway from the sounds of it.
yeah...I just put it in neutral and crawled under there agian. Its the rear U-joint at the pinion, didnt catch it last time, like andy said with the vehicle in park the driveline is loaded up a bit. So thats relieving, U-joints are easy to fix. Thanks guys.

My advice while checking U-Joints is to ALWAYS jack up the rear end, and block tires, and put in neutral. You can find all your slop then by twisting drive shaft.
You can find all your pinion issues also. That pinion shouldn't move a bit. no wiggle at all.
