start up surging
when i started my 94 supercab, 4.0l, it would surge up to 2500+ and drop to almost nothing and sometimes stall, it would only do it when first started in the morning, the rest of the day it would be fine.
i tracked this sucker for almost a year.
none of the codes i got were even close.
i replaced almost every sensor i could get at.
what was going on was that the maf sensor(mas air flow) was coated on the side that faced the air intake filter was coated with a very fine gray ash, you had to look with a jewelers loop to see it. only on the side facing the intake.
i took some throttle body cleaner and shot it down, no problems since.
none of the codes i got reffered to the maf.
i had a buddy that had experience the same thing and got him cured in less than 5 minutes.
that sensor has a couple of strands of platinum wire for the sensing, thats why the shops charge you 125+ for the part and hose you for the service, takes all of about 2 minutes to pull it, clean it, put it back. watch out for this one as it could cost you a lot.
Might also be helpful to know if has been ok since cleaning the MAF & did you ever determine why the MAF sensor got dirty in the first place?????
Like maybe the air filter, airbox or air tube wasn't installed or buttoned up properly, or was damaged & passing unfiltered air to the MAF, or you were using a cotton gauze or foam type air cleaner & or had over oiled it?????
Would be interesting & helpful to know "the rest of the story"!!!!
