just bought an 02 edge xtended cab...but its sitting way to high for a 2 wheel drive...are there any special suspension components in the edge or can i use the basic 3-4 inch lowering kit on this truck... any recommendations on a kit???? how about wheel and tire sizes... thanks...sachmo
The Edge has a 4x4 look to it intentionally. You could probably lower it by tweaking the torsion bars and removing the spacer out of the back, but if you plan on slamming it, you should be prepared to spend a lot of money.
The edge has torsion bar front suspension like the 4x4, where as the regular 2-wheel drive has front coils. The T-bars are alittle more tricky to screw with than the coils. It's easy to lift with T-bars, I don't know about lowering.
Lowering the torsion bars is really easy:
1. Jack up the front end so the wheels are off the ground, and support on jackstands.
2. Crawl under the truck right behind the front wheels and locate the adjuster bolts at the rear end of the torsion bars. Turn both left and right side bolts exactly the same number of turns (looser). IIRC, 4-5 turns was 1" in ride height.
3. Locate the bump stops on the lower A arm of the suspension. With a small saw, cut approx. 1/2" off the top of the stops to allow the suspension to squat more before the bump stops are engaged. Note that the bump stops are a long ways inboard, so 1/2" at the stops allows 1.5" or so of added travel.
4. Drop the front back on the wheels, drive it a bit and park it somewhere very level and measure the fender height on each front fender to ensure they are identical. (It would be a good idea to do this before you start, too, so you know how much you've changed it...)
(I'm told that the bump stops can be cut down to 1/2 their original height without having the shocks be too long.)
The rear is also easy - you just remove the spacer block under the rear springs. These blocks are either 2" or 2.5" thick, so that's how much you lower the rear. You will need new shocks (2wd length) and new u-bolts (2wd length) because the original ones will be too long.
On the 4x4, approx 1" in front and 2.5" in rear makes it pretty much level.
Be sure to re-adjust your headlights when you are done!
Good point, Fred, except that when you lower it you don't mess up the alignment nearly as much as when you raise it, due to the geometry of the A arms. I dropped my front nearly 1" and all it did was slightly increase the negative camber - didn't need to go to the alignment shop. But paying attention to the tire wear to double check that it doesn't need alignment is an excellent idea.
thanks for all the good advise... i think i will lower it as much as possible to even the front and rear as i remove the blocks from the rear... doesn't sound to difficult...you guys are awesome..thanks again...
