My 72' F250 CS toasted a front shock (old Magnum 60) to the point of oil leaking out.
So...............I get under it and look for part numbers and mounting style.
Take the info to my laptop, go to Monroe's site and try to look it up. Part numbers don't come up. OK, say's I, I will just look on the chart and see what it calls for.
They have 3 listings. 1 for HD w/CS, 1 for HD, and 1 for regular F250. Front shocks are all the same. Rear shocks however show 2 different numbers. The HD & CS model using one and the regular F250 using the other lighter duty (stem type top mount).
I go back out and look at the rears and find it is a stem type top mount. WTF? How can the truck be a 8100GVW 3/4 ton, 8 lug wheeled CS with the lighter shocks?
Did Ford just do things on a whim way back when?
The truck also has the flex thingy for the leaf spring pack.
I am going to wind up calling Monroe on Monday, but wanted to know if you guys had any thoughts on this?
Could someone in its past done a frame swap? or Axle swap?
No, truck is totally original and has stamped body code cards all over it, including the front of the bed, firewall, door, etc, and they all match 100
%
I even have all the VERY old brochures for whn the original owner purchased the camper for the truck.
I have never seen an F-250 of that era with any shock other than the stem type rear. So it could have been a special DSO the shock maker is reffering to.

Interesting.
How about the rest of you guys? Are the rear shocks on your trucks stem mounted top side?
The 1964/72 Ford truck parts catalog: illustration of an 1965/72 F250 2WD with Flex-O-Matic rear springs shows the typical airplane type tube shocks with an eyelet on each end. The frame mounted shock bracket has a stud that the eyelet of the shock fits to with a bushing. The rear axle has a U shaped bracket welded to it. The shock mounts the same way here as it does on the top.
The rear shocks listed in the parts catalog text are the same regardless of whether the truck has Flex-O-Matic springs or not. There were four different shocks listed - none are Camper Special specific.
2-D1TZ-18125-A .. Heavy Duty Rear Shocks - These shocks were factory installed and were standard equipment on all 2WD 1970/72 F250 2WD's. There is no Motorcraft part number.
2- C6TZ-18125-J .. Optional Auto Flex Rear Shocks (Motorcraft AB-118)
2-C6TZ-18125-E .. Optional Auto Flex Extra Duty Rear Shock (Motorcraft AX-123)
2- C6TZ-18125-G .. Optional Superflex Rear Shock (Motorcraft AA-142) These shocks were the "spring assist" type.
Your local NAPA store may be able to cross the Motorcraft shock absorber number to a Monroe shock absorber number.

So, if I understand correctly, both top and bottom mounts should be loop style.
Mine obviously is not this way. Could this have been a DSO?
No and possibly. If the DSO is two numbers = no. 6 numbers = possibly.
DSO is only 2 numbers
Someone also might have changed the rear mount, which I would assume is the frame mounted one.
I went out and looked again. It is definitely a factory set up. The upper mount (frame) is held in with factory rivets and they have not been removed or changed
Which mount type would actually be stronger, stem top or loop top?
My '68 has loops on both ends. I think the 73-79's had the stems on top. My dad had two of those trucks and they are both like that. Maybe if your truck is a late '72 it got some of the '73 parts?
