I'm putting a Dana 60 rear axle in my 1977 ford 150 so i can pull my horse trailer.what should i look for when i go to the pick and pull.im going to have to move spring perches around,i know that. But what year did bolt patterns go from standard to metric and stuff like that is what im trying to find out.
How much does the trailer weigh? There are a lot of other differences between an F-150 and an F-250. Brakes and the frame are the other two things you're leaving out.
Putting a big axle under a F-150 doesn't do much to increase towing capacity.
i got brakes.i love my horses more than to have em on a runnaway trailer. As far as the frame,i tought it was the same.I made the gooseneck hitch to spread the weight over the frame anyway.
Again - how much does the trailer weigh? The frames are different because a 10,000 lb trailer puts enormous momentary stress on the towing vehicle when you hit a bump in the road, for example. The frames on heavier duty trucks have a higher ability to withstand those incredible forces which exist for no more than an instant. With too heavy of a trailer, a weaker frame will develop stress fractures and it will eventually fail.
I mean I got brakes in my trailer.About hitting those bumps,I made one of those chingareras(spanish for fansy things)that take the shock out of hitting bumps, agiain for the horses sake.It them things with airbags and chok absorbers on it.So shock loads shouldn't be a problem. As far as the frames being stronger I don't really get it.In 77 there wasn't all this fancy alloy chit. Its should be the same frame material.Where my gooseneck hitch sits on the frame I made it to distribute the weight over 36" of the frame rail,so the load would'nt be placed on one particlar spot of the frame.I may seem stupid and look like a dumb bastaerd(miss spelled on purpose),but If my 350 can tow a 40 foot gooseneck weighing in a 30,000 why can't my 150 to 8,500.After all thats whi I got 4.11 gears.
