My recent Bronco acquisition is a fairly modded '86. I've been living in the F-100 & F-250 world for several years, so I decided to hit the local you-pull-it yard to see what was there. Something that stuck out was that most of the Bronco's I looked at were fuel injected, including a couple marked as '86's. I've got a carb on mine....to be specific, an Eddlebrock performer series manifold & carb. It also has a set of headers and the exhaust terminates roughly where the back seat sits. I'm wondering if there's any way I can decode the block number and determine what engine it's got. It's supposed to have the 351W in it, but apparently it's been eating starters and I'm thinking the pitch is slightly different from that of the starter. (Starter starts off nice and quiet as expected, but gradually gets louder and louder till the pinion gear is shaved down and won't catch the flywheel while parked outside a KFC having lunch on a blazingly hot day. ) On a similar note...how about tranny ID ?? All in all it's been a pretty good truck...but I'd like to wrap up some loose ends the PO didn't....like the grounds....
I had similar problems on my 86 windsor with the c6 tranny. It still isn't quite right, but it works. I don't like the sound of it. There is a post on this in here somewhere, should be within the last few months. Let me see if I can find it and I'll bump it for you. I THINK it's called starter alignment problems. Another fella solved his by getting the bendix gear with a different # of teeth, And I'd like to know where he got his bendix, cause I tried that route, but with no luck. I couldn't find one.
Is the Indexing plat in? A thin tin plate that is between the Bellhousing and Block. Some leave them out after an engine R&R. It is there to line up the starter.
Go to the clutch, transmission, differential, rearend, etc. in the misc. section of the forums. I bumped the post so it should be easy to find. I hope this has helped you out somewhat. I bet you'll find that you have a 351 windsor there. Perhaps I missed it-automatic or standard tranny? If it's the automatic, it's probably the c6. I picked up this 86 EB of mine for 200 bucks. It sounds thogh as if the PO if yours was a little smarter than the PO of mine. Good luck, and let us know.
does it have the stock manifold on it?if it does the windsor is 13726549 if it'sa 302 it's a 15 sumthin er other...only reason i know the windsor number if my 95 302 has the same firing order .....
The stock carb and manifold have been replaced with an Edelbrock Performer set. Anyone know if Edelbrock makes and electric choke for them ? I keep forgetting to unchoke it again in the morning....it does makes it fairly efficient at emptying the fuel tank.
C=Decade of manufacture
5=year
Z=car line
Z=Ford service part (Design) Enginering department
2140= part number
CR=design change
FORD CODES:
(Decade ) A-1940/ B-1950/ F-1990, get the idea?
(Year ) #5
So the decade C plus the year 5, This part is from 1965
(Car Line ) Z=Mustang
A=Galaxie,J=Industrial,O=Fairline/Turino,T=Truck,Z=Mustang,D=Falcon 60-69,M=Mercury,P=Autolite/Motocraft,S=Thunderbird,V=Lincoln.
So this part is from a 1965 Mustang.
(Ford service part) Z=Ford service part
A=Chassis, E=Engine,J=Autolite,X=muscle parts,Z=Ford service parts,B=body,F=Engine acceory
So now we know that we have a part from a 1965 Mustang service part.
(Part number) Well thats the part number
I'll try to post the web page I got this from, sure would have saved me a whole lot of typing!
where exactly on the block is the casting number? I have been tring to figure out exactly what motor I have in my 78. I know its a 460 but I would like to know a little more.
I found that number while replacing the starter, cast into a flat on the bottom of the block. If you're looking for it, it's visible without dropping the starter ( at least on mine it is... )

Click on the link in post #9 and sign in. I think ya can fine more info than ya need there.
Sample casting number: C5ZZ-2140-CR Casting numbers don't end with a Z.

Z=Ford service part (Design) Enginering department Ford Service Parts are what Ford sells to dealers, and is are sold to whoever. E is Engineering.

A=Chassis, E=Engine,J=Autolite,?? Auto-Lite/Motorcraft use an entirely different part numbering system X=muscle parts, X was also used for Bronco 1966/77 Z=Ford service parts, B=body,F=Engine accessory. ??

Some of this info is dead wrong, some needs correcting.
Gotta correct your information, because the prefix of the casting/engineering numbers do not end with the letter Z. Only the actual Ford part number prefix ends with Z (Some L/M parts use a Y).
NOTE: Ford part number prefixes...Mustang for example. The THIRD digit denotes the model, the fourth refers to a Ford part. So: C = 1960's / 5 = 1965 / Z = Mustang / Z = Ford part.
Cougar: C7WY: C = 1960's / 7 = 1967 / W = Cougar / Y = Lincoln/Mercury part.
Both Z and Y were used for everything, so even if it's a L/M part prefix, it may be used on all.
>>The third digit changed many times. Example: = the letter D: 1960/70 Falcon; 1970/77 Maverick; 1975/82 Granada; 1986/2005 Taurus. Note the overlap. The suffix can define what the part fits, it's not just used for design changes.
I spent 35 + years as a Ford Partsman / Parts Manager, so I know what the heck I'm talking about.
