Hi, I have a 92 F250 2wd with a 5.0L and a E4OD. I have been having alot of problems with the E4OD. So I'm looking to swap it for another tranny. Now what would be the easist tranny to swap into my truck?
Also I was wondering how I find out what size rearend I have in the truck? It has 8 lug axels in it.
I believe the 92 came with E40d ,C6 (3 speed) , and Z- manual trans. I don't deal with F250 or larger unless they have a manual trans. So there may be aod also . What ever trans you get you will need the ECM ( engine computer) TO deal with the trans you picked. You may have to swap cross member ,drive stafts depending on choice. Cheapest way is to get a parts truck. Then you'll have all parts you need.
I know about e4od My last truck had 3 rebuilt one and my new 94 is on its second.

Black box re-manned are 3 yr or 75,000 mile warranty from Ford for the E4OD.
If you don't want to roll the dice on a rebuild from your local tranny shop, talk to your local ford parts department.
My original E4OD is still shifting fine..but I've already priced out a rebuild vs. a re-manned from the factory. The re-man will run you $2000 out the door with warranty.
I don't know any transmission shop that will warranty their rebuilds for over 50,000 miles. If you do, I'd love to give them a whirl!! Swap out the lame stock valve body and beef up my OD a bit...but I need a warranty dag nabbit!

I used to deal with one shop but thier warrenty is down to 12000 miles About average for my area and some less.
The one in this truck is a ford reman and its been back 2 times in 4500 miles. And the way my warenty is if they don't put it in the warrenty miles areabout half .

Wow..I might wonder what else would be causing the E4OD to puke so quickly in your rig. Maybe some metal remnants of the last one or your PCM screwing up your line pressures? The stock valve body is lame as well and an easy upgrade. Just a guess...
I've seen the remanned E4OD's in a few late model high end powerstrokes last forever. They are putting a hell of a lot more power out than our puny gasoline motors....
I would find a late 80's truck with a T18 or a T19 in it. It will be a pain to swap all of the clutch linkage and stuff, but I think it will be worth it, because I haven't even had the slightest problem with the T18 in my '87 even after 230,000 running on the same lube (I did change it though when I discovered it was the orginal lube).

To each his own I guess...the pain and time spent to swap out transmissions, drill your cab for shifter, installing linkages, and not to mention ECU issues....it might just be worth getting that Ford remanned and warrantied E4OD. You should be able to get a quick quote if you stopped by your Ford service station. Hell, they may even swap in a t-18 if your credit card could take the hit in labor.
A tranny shop might rebuild the E4OD for cheaper, but good luck finding a warranty beyond 15,000 miles!
Yeah, I know the swap is a real pain, but so is changing out tranny's regularly also. As I said I've never had a single problem with my T18 (except gas mileage), but a friend of mine has a '94 F150 with 200,000 miles on it, and is on his 4th Mazda 5spd (He does a lot of pulling on oilfields),but is about to put in a T18 like mine.
Well I never got more than 30000 mile out of any e4od trans after it was rebuilt. Didn't matter where it was and most require they install to get warranty.
I have everything to swap to 5spd. But now have electric transfer and would like to keep in case wife needs 4x4 to get out drive in winter. Also would need to find a tweecer (I think thats its name) To tell motor ecm what to do since I have Maf and it wasn't available in manuals. Other than that all I have to check is to make sure trans output shaft is same. If not I will need to find one for a sc lb which is hard to find.
